Ideal partner for Ndombele? – Tottenham reviving pursuit of this 21-year-old Euro winner would be a brilliant move

Tottenham Hotspur opinion: Spurs should reignite their interest in Renato Sanches

According to a report in the Independent in 2017, Spurs were in the market for Portuguese international Renato Sanches. The 21-year-old has already seen the highest highs and the lowest lows of professional football.

He was one of the star players for the Portugal national side that went on to win the 2016 European Championships and moved to Bayern Munich that summer. Bayern had had a first-hand look at him when Sanches faced them over two legs in a Benfica shirt a few months prior to the move in the Champions League knockout stages.

Sanches was an absolute rock in midfield, with the Bayern midfielders unable to shrug him off the ball. He was also very tenacious on the day, winning the ball back from his team and comparisons to Dutch Legend Edgar Davids were formed immediately. As stated above, his performances for Portugal only elevated his appeal and he’d quickly become the best upcoming midfield prospect in the world.

However, the move to Bayern couldn’t have gone worse. After playing little to no part in his first season at the club, he was sent on loan to Premier League side Swansea City in the very next summer and only made 12 appearances in the whole season after suffering an injury in January 2018.

It was an unfortunate time for the club and this didn’t help in Sanches’ development. The lack of form and rhythm in his game, along with the injuries had a blow on his confidence as well. Sanches still has a lot of years to work and develop his game. He could still be playing for the next 10-15 years and should choose his next move more carefully.

There aren’t that many better coaches in the world of football right now than Mauricio Pochettino. One of his best attributes is how he helps develop younger players and gets the maximum out of his players. Sanches despite his failings at Swansea would still be ideal for the Premier League. His physicality, technique and tenacity would be welcome by the Spurs fans.

Conclusion

Spurs’ weakest area is in midfield and if they can sign Renato Sanches and Tanguy Ndombele in the same window, it’ll strengthen them massively for the upcoming season and maybe even see them challenge for the Premier League and Champions League. This would be a good move for all parties.
