How Will This Young Italian Striker Fit At Chelsea?

Chelsea are linked with Italian striker Mattia Destro. No wonder the Blues are interested in the talented 23 year old Roma striker, as apart from Diego Costa, Chelsea don’t have a striker who can be relied upon without concerns. Fernando Torres has never really fit in Chelsea while Didier Drogba is 36, and is much slower and rustier than what he used to be. Targeting Destro, who is young and can be trained while also ready to be a regular substitute for Costa looks like a good option.

Destro has the talent to play in Chelsea.

The lad scored 13 times in 14 starts and 6 substitute appearances. That is a great return especially when we consider how compact and slow the Italians like to play. His style is basically that of someone who likes to take on defenders as he has a great balance and skill on the ball. His finishing is strong. He can play as a lone striker as his movement is good and has flair. Wouldn’t attempt killer passes as his vision isn’t something which we can talk of, but is an out and out striker who’ll feed off the midfield.

Though talented, he’ll need a lot of training.

He is raw when we consider him to other Premier League players. Last year we saw two Serie A superstars struggle for fitness and regular game time as Stevan Jovetic and Erik Lamela had seasons to forget. Destro isn’t someone with explosive pace and power or strength and would need to train hard to match the physicality and energy levels of his teammates who have gone through Mourinho’s style of preseason.

If Chelsea want Destro, Torres will have to be sold urgently.

Fernando Torres is all but a fit in Chelsea. His struggles have grown exponentially and now he has reached a stage where he is stuck with the Blues. There would need to be a lot of intricate dealings to move him on for his own good as well as finding some suitable replacement for the club. With his huge salary package, moving him on has become tougher. Destro’s arrival is only going to increase the number of foreign players in Chelsea. So unless Torres is loaned out or sold, Chelsea would have a tough time complying to rules of the league.

The Verdict: Destro can be a gamble worth trying for the mighty Blues. He has the necessary skills and stats to prove that he’s a talented player. He easily fits the bill for Chelsea who need a striker who can act as an able substitute for star man Diego Costa. But for that to happen, Torres will have to be moved on, somehow.
