Here are 2 ways in which Bruce can get the best out of Newcastle’s £40m new signing

Newcastle United opinion: How can Bruce make the best use of Joelinton

There’s been a lot of doom and gloom at St. James’ Park ever since Rafael Benitez’s departure to China took place. They also lost Ayoze Perez to Leicester City, however, they did get a decent sum for him.

They couldn’t hold onto Salamon Rondon either. Steve Bruce has also been appointed as permanent manager, which hasn’t gone down well given Bruce’s previous association with rivals Sunderland.

Losing the three important pieces that the Magpies were identified with would have hurt Newcastle very much but there’s been some room for positivity in recent weeks.

Local boy, Sean Longstaff, has been linked with Manchester United all summer but those reports have died down a little in recent weeks. Having said that, it’s still a possibility. A win against West Ham in pre-season would’ve cheered the fans up a little as well.

But the best news so far has been the signing of Hoffenheim’s Joelinton for a fee of around £40m. Newcastle have shown ambition by signing the Brazilian target-man.

There’s a lot to be excited about if you’re a Newcastle fan, as Joelinton is a very crafty footballer. He scored 11 goals and had 9 assists in 35 appearances for Hoffenheim and will be hoping he can do more of the same for the Magpies.

Let’s now find out what he can offer to the Magpies.

A support striker in a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2

Rafa Benitez used a 3-man backline in the second half of last season and Bruce might do the same to not make too many changes. Joelinton has a fantastic hold-up play, is an excellent dribbler and a selfless creative player.

He has similarities to former Hoffenheim player Roberto Firminho due to his selflessness and he’d be the perfect support for a fox in the box.

A lone striker in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1

Joelinton hasn’t always been the most prolific goalscorer, with Andre Kramaric taking up the goalscoring burden for Hoffenheim and linking up with full-back Nico Schulz. However, Joelinton has the predatory instincts as he’s great in the air. He looks for those easy tap-ins.

If the Brazilian can have runners on the wings or in the full-back positions, he could very happily slot into the lone forward position.
