‘Hope we get Sheffield Wednesday in next round…..oh wait’ – Leeds United Celebrate A Comfortable 5-1 Win Over Newport + Match Report

Match report: Leeds United 5 Newport County 1

Leeds secured an emphatic victory over League Two side Newport County, despite falling behind to an early goal. Striker Kemar Roofe scored a hat-trick as the hosts racked up 5 goals.

Two divisions separated tonight’s teams, but the supposed gulf in class was not noticeable for much of the first-half. Newport County captain Josh Labadie gave the Welsh side the lead after 33 minutes. It was just a reward for the visitors’ promising start to the game.

However, Newport couldn’t quite hold on until half-time. Roofe levelled the terms after Newport failed to clear a corner. It would prove to be a game changer. After half-time, Leeds asserted their dominance quickly. Roofe volleyed home to score an impressive second, to put his side in front.

However, the best was yet to come from him. In the 65th minute, Roofe fired home a spectacular bicycle kick. The eye-catching striker sealed his hat-trick.

Newport didn’t give up. They battled hard despite the tide rapidly turning against them. However, they couldn’t get back into the game. Their chances of salvaging anything from the tie ended when Samu Saiz came off the bench to add a fourth. Ronaldo Viera then secured a 5-1 victory, with a late goal.

The result appeared to flatter Leeds. But the Yorkshire club will be delighted to secure such a comfortable victory. Newport will focus their attention on achieving their goal in League Two after a brave performance last night.

The hat-trick from Kemar Roofe will have pleased those at Elland Road after the sale of star striker Chris Wood earlier this week. Leeds remain unbeaten so far this season, after an impressive start to their campaign.

The fans were certainly impressed by Leeds’ performance and here are some of the tweets we came across on Twitter:
