While Barcelona wrapped up the double, they couldn’t hold on to their record unbeaten streak after losing 5-4 to Levante on Sunday.
Barcelona had been unbeaten in 36 La Liga games this season. They were aiming to become the first team to finish a La Liga season unbeaten since 1931-32 when Real Madrid did it.
However, Ernesto Valverde’s team were miles ahead of the likes of Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Valencia and richly deserved to be the champions of Spain.
La Liga is arguably considered the best league in world football at the moment. With just a game to spare for the conclusion of the season, let us have a look at the La Liga team of 2017/18 season.
Ter Stegen has been stellar in goal this season. With his outstanding shot-stopping abilities and fantastic reflex saves, the German has taken his game to the next level. He is one of the top five goalkeepers in the world and rightly so, bringing an unbelievable rate of consistency in goal for Barcelona this campaign.
A modern-day full-back, who loves to attack and defend with equal gusto, Odriozola has been a revelation for Real Sociedad this season. His marauding displays at right-back haven’t gone unnoticed as he remains in contention for a place in Julen Lopetegui’s squad for the World Cup in Russia.
Godin has established himself as one of the most reliable defenders in world football. Calm and composed, the Uruguay international has been the heartbeat of Atletico Madrid’s defence this season – the defence which has leaked just a paltry 20 goals. A rock at the back, Godin deserves to be in the La Liga team of the season.
Arguably one of the best defenders in world football, Pique has been at his best this season for Barcelona and alongside Samuel Umtiti, he has transformed the Catalan club’s backline. The Spaniard has been one of the reasons for Barcelona shipping just 29 goals and going unbeaten for 36 games this campaign.
Jordi Alba has been a player reborn under Ernesto Valverde this season. The Spaniard has come back to his blistering best, contributing both defensively and attacking-wise. With 2 goals and 8 assists this term, Alba makes it to this team ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Lucas Hernandez and Real Madrid’s Marcelo.
After going missing last season, Busquets is back to his best this time around. The Spaniard’s influence on the Barcelona team just cannot be explained. He does the dirty work and contributes to the team’s attacks but just like every year, Busquets’ good work gets unnoticed.
It has not been a good season for Real Madrid but one of the players who has shown consistentcy is Toni Kroos. With his exceptional passing abilities and creative skills, the German has been the heartbeat in Madrid’s midfield. At his peak, there’s no better central midfielder in the world than Kroos.
Cristiano Ronaldo got off to a slow start in La Liga, with just four goals in the first half of the season but the Portuguese superstar has stepped up since the turn of the year. You just cannot keep Ronaldo out of any team, can you?
Messi has been mesmerising all season, guiding Barcelona to another La Liga triumph. The magician from Argentina has scored plenty of goals and supplied a lot of assists this season and continues to be a force to reckon with.
Be it set pieces or long-range shooting, Messi has simply been unstoppable for Barcelona this season.
Celta Vigo’s primary attacking weapon, Aspas has been brilliant this season. With 20 goals and five assists, the forward has been a shining light in an otherwise disappointing season for Celta. Due to his incredible form in the La Liga, Aspas deserves to be in the Spain squad for the World Cup.
Partnering Aspas would be Luis Suarez, who has enjoyed another prolific season at the Camp Nou. The Uruguayan has been deadly in front of goal throughout the season and deserves to have his name in the La Liga team of the year.
