Here are 2 shrewd signings who can save Newcastle from relegation including £15m MLS hotshot

Two players Newcastle United should sign in January to avoid relegation

According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has admitted he is working on transfers during the winter market.

Newcastle United have managed to climb up from the relegation zone to 13th place in the table, courtesy of back-to-back morale-boosting victories over Watford, Bournemouth and Burnley. Despite the wins, Rafael Benitez and his side still appear set for a season-long battle against relegation.

Benitez was not sufficiently backed during the summer transfer window, which arguably resulted in a slow start to the new Premier League season. Although the Magpies have started to show signs of life, they’ll surely need a couple of reinforcements in January to avoid relegation this season.

That being said, here are two players Newcastle should pursue in January to escape the drop.

Miguel Almiron (Atlanta United)

If Newcastle are to start breaking down stubborn defences in the Premier League, they need greater potency in the final third.

Ayoze Perez, known for his intelligence and movement, has been subpar this season and apart from the Spaniard, the Magpies clearly lack an outright No.10, a player who can split open defences with one pass and create goalscoring chances.

Miguel Almiron

And as per the Sun, Newcastle are interested in Atlanta United’s attacking midfielder, Miguel Almiron. The playmaker could cost £15million, as per the report.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a stellar season in the MLS, netting 13 times and assisting 11 in 34 appearances. He is a technically gifted player, who is blessed with vision and quick feet. The Paraguayan can pick out a pass, works tirelessly for the team and can create and score goals with ease.

Hence, Newcastle must make a statement of intent in January by splashing huge money on the promising Almiron.

Jermain Defoe (Bournemouth)

Apart from a creative midfielder, a natural goalscorer should be a top priority for Benitez in January. The likes of Muto and Joselu have underwhelmed and even though Rondon showed real promise with his match-winning display against Bournemouth, the lack of a clinical goalscorer in the team is one of the reasons why the Magpies are in such trouble.

Jermain Defoe

Well, Benitez would do well to sign Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe. The English striker has played less than 30 minutes in the Premier League this season and would be ready for some regular football before calling time on his career.

Newcastle must try signing the former Spurs and Portsmouth man to St. James Park as the 36-year-old still has enough left in the tank to be a goalscorer for the Magpies. He would add depth and competition to the squad.
