Leeds United bounced back from their 4-1 loss to Wolves in the midweek, by defeating Barnsley 2-0 at the Oakwell, earlier in the day.
Thomas Christiansen made three changes to the side that lost to Wolves in the midweek, handing starts to Caleb Ekuban, Eunan O’Kane and goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald in place of Kemar Roofe, Ronaldo Vieira and Andy Lonergan respectively.
The Whites began brightly with Ekuban testing the home side’s goalkeeper in the 4th minute and Alioski going close 7 minutes later, with a volley. The early pressure paid off as halfway through the first period, Samu Saiz handed Leeds the lead with a low strike from 20 yards out into the bottom left corner.
Leeds continued to dominate the proceedings with the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Ekuban and Saiz himself going close, until Alioski doubled the visitors lead in the 4th added minute of the first-half, cutting in from the right side to swerve an effort into the bottom left corner again.
The visitors began the second half on a similar note with Pablo Hernandez going very close just 3 minutes after the restart. The likes of Ekuban and Alioski came close to adding to Leeds’ advantage, but couldn’t make their chances count. In the final minute, the Tykes did come close to scoring through substitute Ryan Hedges, but Wiedwald was alert to the situation and pulled off an important save to protect his clean sheet.
Following their recent humbling at the hands of Wolves, the win in the derby will come as a boost for the team, the manager and the supporters.
