Everton 1-1 Newcastle United: Rondon goal hands the Magpies an away point
Newcastle United claimed a vital and a priceless away draw against Everton at Goodison Park to look upwards in the table. After a bad loss to West Ham United in the weekend, it was imperative for Rafa Benitez’s men to come up with some sort of a response. However, coming to Merseyside, not many people would have given them a chance.
Yet, the Magpies took the lead in the 19th minute through Salomon Rondon after a sweeping counter-attacking move, assisted by Jacob Murphy. Everton responded well though and scored the equaliser seven minutes before the break through Richarlison. The Brazilian did well to lift the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
The hosts continued to put pressure after the break, however, the away side were defiant and a tad lucky at times. Martin Dubravka made some crucial saves, while a last-ditch Federico Fernandez tackle to deny Gylfi Sigurdsson a chance to score was the one that stood out.
Marco Silva’s men had 19 attempts on goal with 76% possession, epitomising their dominance in the game. But credits to Newcastle for staying in the game and creating chances of their own to seal three points. Had Christian Atsu done well, we could have witnessed an upset at the Goodison.
This result keeps Everton at sixth place in the table with 23 points, eight points behind fourth-placed Arsenal. Meanwhile, Newcastle are now 14th in the table with 13 points, four clear of the danger zone.
Here’s how some Newcastle fans reacted to the result:

That’s a great point tonight, one defeat in six games for #NUFC and it looks like they’re on the verge of signing a highly-rated, and very talented, player in Miguel Almiron on loan!!
