Great job Klopp – Liverpool have bagged a massive coup by securing the long-term future of this first-team ace signed for a paltry £8m

Why Liverpool are right in extending the contract of Andy Robertson

According to a report in BBC, Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has signed a new contract with the club, keeping him at Anfield until the summer of 2024. The 24-year-old Scotland captain joined the Reds from relegated Hull City in July 2017 for a fee close to £8m.

With Joe Gomez and Sadio Mane recently extending their stay at the club, along with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, the Reds are in a good position in terms of keeping the core of the squad together.

New signings Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Fabinho, etc. make up for a presentable future for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

As per the report, Robertson said it was an “easy decision” for him to sign this new deal. Here’s why Liverpool have done the best thing by offering the extension:

Robertson is the heartbeat of this club

If we look at the way Robertson plays, it epitomizes Liverpool’s upward trajectory. The left-back is probably the best in the league in his position right now and he proves the same with his performances week in week out. The 24-year-old single-handedly drives the team forward at times.

Even when the Reds lost their first league game at Manchester City two weeks ago, he was one of their best players. He kept Raheem Sterling quiet and provided the assist for Roberto Firmino’s equalizer. No one can forget his performance against PSG at Anfield where he kept World Cup-winning Kylian Mbappe under check for most parts of the game.

Jose Mourinho famously said in a press conference that he is tired of watching Robertson sprinting up and down the pitch after his Manchester United team were defeated by Liverpool in December,

Turning the page back to the start of last season, the Reds were worried about the left-back position as Alberto Moreno never filled them with confidence. In came Robertson and the majority of the eyebrows were raised. However, the way the latter has come leaps and bounds in the last 12 months is astonishing, to say the least.

He has probably solved the left-back issue for a while now and that is a relief for the supporters in the red side of Merseyside. All in all, it was a no-brainer from Liverpool’s point of view to offer the 24-year-old a new contract. And truth be told, it was just a matter of time.
