According to recent reports, Southampton are running the rule over Liverpool outcast Mamadou Sakho but the Anfield side will need to reduce their £20 million asking fee for a deal to happen.

The Saints are likely to have some issues at the back in the near future, with Jose Fonte asking for a move away from the St Mary’s Stadium in the January transfer window. With reported interest in Virgil van Dijk also building, and Liverpool one of the supposed suitors, Claude Puel’s men could be left short at the back.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has banished Sakho to the Reds reserves following a number of disciplinary issues in pre-season, with the France international not featuring for the Merseyside outfit his campaign and he probably will also not be part of his future plans.

The former Paris Saint-Germain enforcer clearly comes with some baggage but is a competent defender when fit and in the right mind-frame.  The 26-year-old centre-back’s wages are also posing a problem for Southampton, with the Liverpool man on £105,000 a week at Anfield.

Sakho’s future appears to be away from Anfield and as such a move to the south coast could be an excellent choice – especially should Fonte or Van Dijk depart Southampton in the next couple of weeks.

La Liga side Sevilla has made their interest known while there is also an option to move to Turkey with Galatasaray.
