Good job Paul Cook: Wigan Athletic’s latest signing could work wonders in the new season

Share

Wigan Athletic have signed Leonardo Da Silva Lopes on a four-year deal. The young Portuguese has joined from Peterborough United, having made his debut for the club back in 2015.

The youngster could be a great addition to the squad. The Portuguese teenager made 38 league appearances in League One last season he must strive to do the same next term with his new club.

Lopes is not too tall but his skills on the ball are quite impressive. Under Paul Cook’s guidance, the player should progress and mature perfectly for Championship football.

Wigan have successfully secured a promotion by winning the League One title, and they will be looking to stay put in the upcoming campaign. With players Will Grigg, Nick Powell and Chey Dunkley at the club, they shouldn’t have too much of a problem. And Lopes’ inclusion will also be an advantage.

The report from BBC claims Wigan signed Lopes for a seven-figure transfer fee, which is quite impressive for a side that just got promoted. It goes to show that the player boasts of immense potential, having played 83 league games at the age of 19.

There will be plenty of spots to compete for in Wigan’s squad next season as they work hard to ensure they can preserve their second-tier status.

Undoubtedly, it is a big step for a teenager to move from League One to the Championship but Leonardo Da Silva Lopes is incredibly talented. He is clever with possession and seems to have a penchant for short passes.

Lopes can be quite versatile as well, and that explains as to why Cook was interested in signing him in the first place.

The teenager can play in the centre of the midfield and is equally comfortable on either wing. This often allows him to switch positions with teammates throughout the game and adjust his style depending on the situation.

Having paid a lofty amount for their new signing, Wigan will have to be careful with how they manage a player who hasn’t played in the Championship before. He must be trained correctly and Cook should ensure he has the right mindset to succeed. But the player is still quite young and at Wigan, he will find a few older players who can mentor him as the season progresses.

Lopes should have no problem settling in and hopefully, we can see this young talent work wonders in the months to come.
