Why Man United Have Done The Right Thing With Victor Lindelof – Showing Patience
In the fast-paced world of modern Premier League football, there’s hardly any time allotted for managers or players to settle in. Given the demanding nature of the league, new arrivals are expected to slot into the team effortlessly upon arrival. These expectations are unfair since it leads to a lot of problems if the player fails to perform well and can cause damage to their confidence. Not every league is the same and it takes time for everyone to adjust. Some are able to do it faster than others but Victor Lindelof is a player who has taken almost 3 months to settle in.
That’s not really a lot of time but it certainly felt like it. Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling have been quite solid at the heart of the United defence. Jose Mourinho also had a couple of other defenders who could have easily filled in. Yet, there was a growing concern among the supporters regarding Lindelof’s lack of presence.
When he arrived from Benfica over the summer, the fans were quite excited since a good centre-back can truly do wonders for any team. Lindelof certainly was a viable target, given his past performances and it was frustrating to see him not perform – even at times when the Red Devils were a bit short of options at the back.
In a league where players are every bit as disposable as hand towels, Lindelof’s future came under scrutiny for his lack of game time and contribution. However, Mourinho stood by him and now it seems like the manager’s trust and faith are paying off. Lindelof took the slow and steady route and is finally looking more and more like a Manchester United defender.
For example, in the game against Brighton, the former Benfica player kept Glenn Murray at bay. Meanwhile, in the match against Watford, Lindelof, once again, dealt admirably, the player this time being Richarlison, who is being regarded as one of the most influential players of the season. With Bailly and Jones uncertain for the Arsenal match due to injury, we can definitely hope to see more from Lindelof.
The upcoming few matches will be crucial for him if he is to establish himself in the side. It will be interesting to see how that turns out but United have invested a lot of time and money on the player and the fans and management will be hoping that they can reap the rewards soon enough.
