Good Job Jokanović – This £5m Signing Is What Fulham Need At The Moment, But He Is Not Ideal As Well

Diego Rolan

Is Diego Rolan A Good Signing For Fulham?

West Londoners Fulham look set to sign Bordeaux’s Uruguayan international striker Diego Rolan. The Cottagers are putting the final touches on a £5million deal, though until the deal is done and dusted, he remains a target for other clubs as well.

As of now however, Championship side Fulham are the only club to have offered the 24-year-old a contract and they see him as the man who can lead their promotion challenge from the front, next season.  The league is looking wide open and this has seen certain clubs becoming desperate to bring in that one star who will make the difference between promotion glory and languishing in the second tier for another season.

Rolan has scored 39 goals in 149 games in his five-year stay at Bordeaux; hardly prolific you might say but at his age, he is only going to get better. He managed 9 in 29 appearances last season to complement some excellent all-round performances.

Last season’s play-off semi-finalists hope that Rolan chooses Craven Cottage to add to what has already been a pretty busy transfer window for them already. Former skipper Scott Parker chose to retire at the end of last season and has taken up a coaching position at Tottenham Hotspur.

Ryan Sessegnon, rather than heading to Wembley with the North Londoners, chose to sign what is actualky his first professional contract with the club, adding to the extension of Tom Cairney’s contract. The Scotland international midfielder was widely expected to end up at Newcastle United this season but has instead committed to Fulham – for now at least.

As well as this, Marcelo Djalo has signed a three-year deal at the Cottage. While Jozabed was sent to Celta Vigo, popular left-back Scott Malone opted for the Premier League by signing for play-off winners Huddersfield Town.

Ibrahima Cisse was snapped up from Standard Liege while Chelsea man Lucas Piazon has chosen to return for a second loan spell following his successful if shortened time at the club last season due to a facial injury.

Fulham could do worse than Diego Rolan. However, if they see him as the man who can bring the 20 something goals required from a central striker to lift them into the automatic promotion spots then I think they’ll be disappointed.

The Championship is a tough enough league and his past record does not suggest he is quite what they need at present, even if his overall quality is just about fine.

Verdict: Negative
