Good Job Daniel Farke – This Norwich Midfielder Could Become One Of The Best In The Championship

James Maddison

Why James Maddison’s Contract Extension Is Crucial For Norwich City

Top midfield prospect James Maddison has extended his stay at Norwich City, signing a new four-year contract with the East Angilan club.

Having joined the Championship side from Coventry City back in January 2016, the 20-year-old has gone on to impress for the Canaries and scored his first goal for the club in April.

Maddison gained valuable experience playing on loan at Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen, helping them build a foundation which saw them finish as runners-up behind Celtic as well as reaching the Scottish League Cup Final.

Although Maddison’s new deal keeps him at Carrow Road until 2021, the club have the option to extend it by a further year but in truth, he is expected to improve at a rate of knots and will need to be tied down a long way before that date on a bigger salary, or be sold for huge profit.

Given his lack of experience, Maddison could not break into the side past Wes Hoolahan and Alex Pritchard last term but will apparently be given every chance to impress this pre-season by Daniel Farke. It would be no surprise to see him start the Championship season in the first XI.

Maddison, native to Coventry of course, played for the Sky Blues 42 times in League One and in cup competitions, scoring 5 goals in that time and impressing greatly for such a young player. His Norwich City career has taken a little while to get going arguably, though his personal development has not stopped and at Aberdeen he took another few steps up the football ladder.

In 14 fleeting Scottish Premiership appearances, Maddison either scored or made a goal every 107 minutes. Take into account that he’s a midfielder, 20 years of age and doing it with brand new team mates in an unfamiliar environment, you can see why the Canaries hierarchy are pleased with that performance.

His passing is crisp and accurate and frankly, if this lad isn’t in the Premier League within two years maximum then someone, somewhere has done something very wrong! Norwich City cannot take for granted their status as fairly regular Premier League participants and we only have to go back to 2010 to find the last time they played in the third tier of English football.

Tying down players of Maddison’s ability is absolutely every bit as important as bringing in new talent from outside the club and they have done well to convince him to stick around.
