Lyon 2-2 Manchester City: Pep’s Cityzens qualify despite away draw
It took Manchester City to go a goal down to find their stride as the Cityzens played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Groupama Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s men lacked the end product and the cutting edge in the first half as they struggled to find the back of the net. The likes of Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling constantly threatened but failed to kill off their moves.
Maxwell Cornet opened the scoring for the home side in the second half after beating Oleksandr Zinchenko to curl one into the top corner. Aymeric Laporte then replied with a powerful header to level the matters, six minutes after going down.
Once City went down they looked a completely different side. But the tide soon started to shift once again as Maxwell Cornet scored a second to hand Lyon another lead. Sergio Aguero then rose highest to head in after just 3 minutes after Cornet’s second.
It almost seemed as though Manchester City needed that extra motivation which they regained after going a goal down. Pep Guardiola will be disappointed with his side failing to kill off the game as they have so often done this season.
Memphis Depay and Maxwell Cornet caused all sorts of problems for the defenders as well. Fernandinho wasn’t at his sparkling best on the night as well and looked slightly off the pace, earning a yellow card due to his poor tackles.
Ferland Mendy ensured Kyle Walker didn’t enjoy a comfortable day at the office as the Frenchman often beat City defenders down the flanks and tracked down whenever he surged up front. If there’s any side that seems to have disrupted Manchester City’s rhythm this season, it’s Olympique Lyon.
Let’s take a look at how some Manchester City fans reacted to the draw against Lyon in the Champions League-
Definetly not at our best attacking wise, but defence has improved massively.

Very lucky. A better team would’ve killed you. Good draw, but I can’t see Man City winning the Champions League. You don’t have the pedigree.

We didn’t get the 3 point but the boys put up a great fight not to lose all the points. 💙 💙 💙
