Go for it Woodward – This £33m midfield beast is a necessity for Mourinho’s Manchester United

Jean Michael Seri

Why Ligue 1 Star Jean Michael Seri would be a great signing for Manchester United

Now that the dust has settled on the Alexis Sanchez transfer, it appears that everyone has got what they wanted. Arsenal got a troublesome player off their books, Manchester City don’t have to worry about the balance of their dressing room and most importantly, Manchester United get one of the best players in the world for almost nothing.

United are clearly not going to win the league this season so the squad improvements that are happening now are probably with next season in mind. Sanchez is a clear statement of intent to show that if anyone was going to catch City over the next few years it will be the Red Devils.

However, Sanchez is just one part of the jigsaw. The service to the new Manchester United No. 7 needs to be of the highest order. To that end, United have been linked with Nice midfielder Jean-Michael Seri, a player who almost went to Barcelona last summer and who has the class to make the step up to Old Trafford.

He will be a replacement for two players that have played their parts under Mourinho with no guarantee of being there next season. Michael Carrick is retiring at the end of the season and has found his opportunities limited during this campaign due to various reasons. His teammate Marouane Fellaini’s future remains unclear but it is unlikely that he will be able to force himself back into the United midfield.

The Ivory Coast international Jean-Michael Seri has been pointed out to Mourinho by many scouts, who highlight his talent lies in playing the ball, pace and intelligence. This can help take United to the next level. By signing the 26-year-old they are also getting a player at the top of his game who is likely to grow into a key element in the Manchester United team.

He is more attack-minded than Matic and more defensively minded than Pogba, so he could be a link-up man between the defence and attack. He only has a £33m release clause so he cannot be considered as an expensive player, at least by United’s financial standards.

If United are able to get this signing over the line, it would prove that they are still the biggest players in the transfer market. Manchester United are clearly capable of getting any player they want in the world but a player like Jean-Michael Seri would be a shrewd signing rather than a big name one, and for this reason, it has to happen. Get it done Woodward!
