According to a report in Daily Mail, Premier League giants Manchester United are one of the clubs who are closely monitoring Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic.

As per the Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Milan are interested in the player and have already started negotiations with the Catalans. They are laying the foundations for a deal worth £34million.

However, Barcelona will hold out for a £39m price tag if they are to sell Rakitic. Here’s why Manchester United should meet that valuation and sign the Croatian star:

Rakitic would enhance the quality of United’s midfield

Manchester United are playing a better brand of football under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and are on course to make a fantastic finish to this season. Whether that guarantees them a place in the Champions League next season remains to be seen.

Irrespective of the outcome, their target should be to close the gap up the table and challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

For that to happen, enhancement of quality in the midfield should be a primary concern.

As of now, the Red Devils have Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba as options in central midfield, while the likes of Fred, Andreas Pereira haven’t done enough to warrant a regular place in the team.

Hence, signing Ivan Rakitic could help that cause two-fold. The Barcelona man can even replace Herrera and form a partnership with Pogba and Matic in the midfield.
