Go for it Silva – Everton signing this highly-rated 21-year-old could turn out to be an inspired piece of business

Why Eray Comert would be a good addition for Everton

It looks like Kurt Zouma is set to stay put at Chelsea amidst a lot of speculation surrounding his future. New Blues boss Frank Lampard wants to keep hold of the Frenchman this season.

Zouma, 24, spent the 2017-18 season on loan at Stoke City and thrived during his temporary stint at Everton last term. Marco Silva is keen to sign the defender on a permanent deal for Everton this summer.

The 24-year-old stopper has needed to fight his way back into the reckoning for France after his serious knee injury in 2016. He was not picked for the World Cup but was back in the fold last season.

With Zouma highly unlikely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, Everton manager Marco Silva needs to shift his focus towards achieving other defensive targets.

Earlier this month, the Daily Mail had claimed that the Toffees were interested in signing FC Basel defender Eray Comert.

Although the links have cooled down considerably in the last couple of weeks, it’s probably the right time for Silva to reignite his interest in the defender and sign him before the new season commences.

The Toffees looked defensively shaky at times last season, regardless of a strong partnership between Michael Keane and Kurt Zouma. Zouma is unlikely to return at Goodison Park, so Yerry Mina is expected to partner Keane in central defence next season.

Mina couldn’t make a great impact at Everton after joining from Barcelona last summer due to poor fitness and injury problems. And while the towering Colombian will be backed to come good this time around, Silva mustn’t forget to replace Zouma at the club.

This why the Merseysiders should go all out for Eray Comert. However, FC Basel are understood to be against the idea of a move, as they want Comert to hang around for another season.

But the 21-year-old defender would suit the type of addition that Everton have tried to make under Marcel Brands, their Director of Football.

Comert is one of the highly-rated young defenders in Switzerland and has attracted interest from Everton following a series of impressive performances in 2018/19. The Swiss Under-21 skipper believes it could be the right time in his career to move to the Premier League.

Despite being 21, Comert is mature and has all the qualities required to thrive in the Premier League.

Verdict

Comert is still very young but he has the potential to develop into an excellent player if he was to move to Goodison Park. He could turn out to be an inspired piece of business for the Toffees this summer.
