Everton FC Opinion- Why Everton should re-sign Romelu Lukaku in the summer

According to a report in Daily Mail, Manchester United are contemplating the idea of selling Romelu Lukaku in the summer to lure Paulo Dybala or Mauro Icardi to Old Trafford. The Belgian has only started twice under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and there is a suggestion that the club is ready to move him on. (h/t Mirror)

Both Dybala and Icardi have fallen out with their respective clubs Juventus and Inter Milan, and Lukaku is happy to move on in search of more game time. (Daily Mail)

The 25-year-old was bought under the regime of Jose Mourinho for an initial fee of £75m but has failed to really live to the reputation he created by banging in goals for Everton. He has only scored 29 goals in 71 appearances in league and Champions League, which is not enough for a striker playing for Manchester United.

Romelu Lukaku

Since the arrival of Solskjaer in the management seat, Marcus Rashford has got the nod in the central striker position, and the Englishman has done pretty well in the past couple of months.

Hence, all in all, it makes sense from Lukaku’s viewpoint that he leaves United in the summer. Here’s why Everton should re-sign him and solve their huge problem:

Everton’s need for a striker is a must

Ever since they let go of Lukaku in the summer of 2017, they have struggled to replace the Belgian international. None of Cenk Tosun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Oumar Niasse did enough or scored the goals to fill in the big boots of the 25-year-old.

If we take a look at the numbers since the start of last season, Niasse has scored eight in 27 appearances, Calvert-Lewin eight in 57 and Tosun 7 in 34. (Note Tosun was bought in January 2018 and Niasse was loaned out in January 2019).

Compared that to Lukaku’s time at Everton, he netted 53 goals in 110 league appearances, we can clearly see the difference. For that reason, the Toffees have struggled for goals up front.

Hence, signing the Manchester United in the summer window wouldn’t be a bad choice for the club, as they seek to right the wrongs ahead of the start of next season.

Conclusion

If we look from the perspective of both parties, this move makes complete sense. Lukaku needs game time on a regular basis, and Everton require a goalscorer up front. The reattachment of the duo will help the team in a massive way.
