Go for it Sarri – Why shelling out £40million for this talented Italian sensation is a brilliant move for Chelsea

Why signing Mattia Caldara from Juventus would be a great addition for Chelsea

Chelsea must bounce back this year after appointing new manager Maurizio Sarri as the club’s head coach. The Blues have only completed one major signing in Jorginho, with Sarri now left with another two weeks before the transfer window slams shut.

The manager must bring in more additions to keep up with Chelsea’s close rivals. The London club have been on the hunt for a new central defender this summer. Chelsea were initially interested in signing Juventus defender Daniele Rugani, but so far no agreement has come to light.

Roman Abramovich is reportedly frustrated with the lack of transfer activity which has led the club to consider alternatives. Chelsea have subsequently been linked with Rugani’s teammate Mattia Caldara over the last few days. The Blues have reportedly identified the defender as an alternative to Daniele Rugani.

Reports suggest that the Blues have submitted a £40million bid for the defender and are awaiting a response. However, Chelsea look like they need an addition as soon as possible.

Caldara made the move to Juventus last year but has failed to register a single appearance for the club as he was subsequently loaned out to Atalanta last season. The Italian rose through Atalanta’s Youth Academy before being shifted to the senior squad in 2013. He enjoyed two loan spells before leaving for Turin.

The Italian made a total of 24 appearances in the Serie A last season, scoring 3 goals. He is generally utilized as a centre-back but Caldara is also comfortable playing on the right flank. The 24-year-old is a tall, strong and agile man. Atalanta’s rearguard was considerably strengthened with Caldara’s presence in the defence.

The defender is calm and composed on the ball. One of his best qualities is his vocal personality which enables him to keep the defence line in check at all times. At the age of 24, Caldara has shown true leadership qualities. He’s also a good passer of the ball, averaging a pass success rate of 84.1% in the league last season. The Italian is strong in the air, winning an average of 1.9 aerial duels per game.

While it’s certain Chelsea have a lot of ground to make up for, Sarri should go on and complete the transfer before the window slams shut. He would provide additional cover and support to the likes of Rudiger, Christiansen and Cahill. Sarri is also familiar with the Serie A players which will be an added bonus for the team.
