Go for it Sarri – This £89m midfield general could immediately turn Chelsea into title contenders

Why signing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic can turn Chelsea into title contenders next season

Chelsea have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Lazio ace Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer. Several clubs have been chasing the talented 23-year-old but recently, the club chief Lotito has claimed that he would consider “indecent offers”. (The Metro)

According to the Metro, the midfielder is rated at €100m (£89m). Over the years, Roman Abramovich’s financial powers have been quite apparent. And it goes without saying that his pockets are deep enough to stump up a fee that would appeal to Lotito.

As far as Milinkovic-Savic is concerned, there is no question as to whether or not he deserves it because the player is one of the most talented youngsters across Europe right now. With new manager Maurizio Sarri at the helm, the Blues have a long way to go but there are certain gaps that must be filled.

For any team to succeed, a strong midfield is a must. And Chelsea struggled to a great extent in the previous campaign since they lacked a quality midfield department. Barring the powerful N’Golo Kante, none of Chelsea’s midfielders were impressive enough.

Ross Barkley has his own set of fitness concerns while Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko have failed miserably. Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas is on the wrong side of 30 and there is a growing need for the club to refresh their forces in the middle of the park.

Sarri has already brought in Jorginho from Napoli, who is a talented midfield enforcer. However, the prospect of deploying a midfield trio consisting of Jorginho, Kante and Milinkovic-Savic should sound like a tantalizing prospect for Chelsea.

The Serbian sensation is a strong presence in the field and he often utilises his physicality to dominate his opponents. Although his game is naturally attack-oriented, the player also contributes defensively.

Known for being quite proactive, Milinkovic-Savic can circulate the ball exceptionally well, making him a perfect fit for Sarri’s football philosophy and tactics.

In addition to scoring 12 goals and providing 3 assists in 35 appearances for Lazio last season, the 23-year-old also created 45 chances.

Hence, Chelsea must shell out the money to sign Milinkovic-Savic. By doing so, they will establish a solid midfield force that can propel them towards winning the title in the upcoming season.
