Go for it Rodgers – This 6ft 4in West Ham star would be a huge statement signing for Celtic

Why Celtic must do everything in their powers to sign Andy Carroll

According to a report from the Scottish Sun, Celtic are interested in a January swoop for West Ham striker Andy Carroll.

The Hoops are looking to strengthen their attacking ranks for the second half of the season and beyond, having been left with just Odsonne Edouard to lead their line. Leigh Griffiths has taken a break from football for rehab and Moussa Dembele is yet to be replaced at Parkhead following his summer deadline day switch to Lyon.

Celtic have turned their attention towards Andy Carroll, who has just six months left on his contract at West Ham. The former England international has been plagued with injuries over the years and has managed just four games this term, with all of them coming this month.

With Andy Carroll not close to signing a new deal with the Hammers, should Celtic eye a cut-price deal for him when the transfer market reopens next month?

Despite his injury concerns, Celtic must surely try bringing Andy Carroll to the Parkhead. The towering striker has had an unlucky last few years due to injuries that certainly has hampered his growth.

The 29-year-old showed enormous potential at Newcastle United after bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old kid in 2006. However, recurrent injury problems and poor form have seen Carroll fail to reach top potential. But when fit, he is a devastating player to come up against and can be termed as one of the best target-men in the Premier League.

In Carroll, Celtic would get a burly, strong centre-forward capable of bullying the defenders with ease. The 6ft 4in ace is not particularly quick and doesn’t really have the pace to give the defenders a run for their money but he makes up for it with his hold-up play and tactical awareness.

The 29-year-old is a physically imposing striker who is deadly inside the box and an asset from set-pieces.

While he is adept at putting away the chances that come his way, Carroll is adept at linking up with his teammates in the final third with touches, subtle flick-ons and layoffs and is a centre-forward who loves to play with the back facing the goal.

Celtic are currently short of options up front, with Rodgers overly reliant on Odsonne Edouard. So it’s important for Rodgers to get a new striker next month and Carroll would represent a fantastic signing.
