Why Re-signing Andy Carroll Would Be A Smart Move By Newcastle United
West Ham United are in a bit of a mess right now and are considering selling striker Andy Carroll (who they signed for £15million) before the transfer window slams shut. One deal rumoured to be on the cards is a return to Newcastle United for the tall England striker, but would the idea of heading back to St James’s Park be a good one for him?
Given the current situation on Tyneside, the answer undoubtedly is ‘yes’. Newcastle have shown in their first three games of the campaign that they are badly in need of any Premier League quality they can get and bringing Carroll in would help to alleviate some of their relegation fears.
West Ham traveled to Newcastle this past weekend and lost 3-0. It would not surprise me one bit if respective chairmen and agents discussed a possible deal for the transfer of Carroll high up in the Milburn Stand.
For his part, Carroll would surely welcome a move back home and even though he has settled in Essex, he has been known to have bought another property near Newcastle and in fact has spent time there with his young family. There would be no culture shock for anyone involved to move away from the south east and his career may well be finally be on track if he were to be the darling of his hometown supporters once again.
As with most players of the required age and experience, the spectre of World Cup football is hovering this season and sitting on the bench or in the reserves at your club is not an option. England manager Gareth Southgate, for all the country’s past failures, will not accept reserve or Championship players in the England team and so regular Premier League football is a requirement.
Carroll would fit right into this current Newcastle set-up, given their penchant for long balls. The fact that four talented wingers are in the squad but currently have little to aim for when beating their full-back makes it more suitable for Carroll to arrive and start firing straightaway.
It’s not that Carroll is just a giant bruiser either. He has arguably scored his better and more memorable goals with his left foot and that particular hammer would be put to better use in Newcastle than in London.
It may have taken a while, but frankly for a guy who at the time of leaving SJP had played around 6 months of Premier League football in his life, it would be a perfect deal for Newcastle to have raked in £35million for Carroll when he left and get a more rounded player back for a fraction of that now.
