Go For It Pochettino – This £13million Dortmund Star Will Be A Sensible Signing For Tottenham

Why Borussia Dortmund’s Matthias Ginter Would Be A Good Addition For Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino will know that he will have to improve on his first team quality in order to challenge for the title next season. His Spurs side was consistent last season but Pochettino needs a few additions to make sure that they have enough depth to compete on all four fronts.

This has seen him get linked with a few players and one such player is Borussia Dortmund centre-back, Matthias Ginter. Ginter joined Dortmund back in 2014 and has established himself as an important player in the squad, making 66 league appearances in the Bundesliga already.

He has made 9 senior appearances for the German national side at the age of 23 and is highly rated in his country’s domestic circuit. Though he was a regular under Thomas Tuchel, the £13m rated defender seems ready to quit the club this summer and Pochettino wants him to add to his armoury.

A ball playing defender with exceptional passing abilities, Ginter has a key pass ratio that is unheard of for a centre back. He can also play as a right back, which tells us about his ability in possession of the ball.

Strong and athletic, Ginter is a bit too eager with his tackling and gives away needless fouls but will get better with more game time. He loves to stay ahead of the game and set up counter attacks from the back and at just 23, is a long-term option for Pochettino.

The Argentine prefers a four-man backline but also used the 3-4-3 system regularly last season. Eric Dier remained as the only backup for the first-choice centre-backs Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, and adding Ginter will make their squad stronger at the back.

Ginter might search for first team chances and Pochettino cannot promise him the same. But the German ticks most of the boxes in Pochettino’s recruitment model, which has been a hit in London and there are very few clubs better suited for Ginter.

As already mentioned, he could be a liability in the English league and might take time to adapt to the new challenges. But playing alongside two of the best defenders in the world would help him massively and he’ll get accustomed to the new conditions quickly, helping Pochettino establish a centre-back lineup that would not need meddling with for years to come.
