Why Yaya Toure Deserves A Contract Extention With Manchester City

As per the latest reports from The Sun, Manchester City midfield powerhouse Yaya Toure may be handed a new contract at the end of the season by manager Pep Guardiola. The 33-year old Ivorian, who has been at the forefront of recent success for the Citizens, is in the final few months of his current $18 million-a-year contract which expires in June this year.

Toure was exiled by the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager upon his appointment in the summer as he deemed Toure was lacking the necessary fitness levels.

This led to a lot of bad blood between Toure’s agent Dimitri Seluk and Guardiola with the agent making controversial statements against the manager in the media. These developments seemed to have spelled the end of Toure’s career at the Etihad, but he has managed to work his way back into the good books of the Spanish coach and may well see his stay extended beyond this season.

Toure had to wait until November to make his first league appearance of the season and he made an immediate impact, scoring a double in the 2-1 victory over Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace at the Selhurst Park. He has not looked back since then.

With summer signing Ilkay Gundogan suffering a season ending injury in December, Toure’s involvement became more prominent as the season progressed. The 33-year old started getting more time and was reinstated to the UEFA Champions League squad, after having been dropped for the first half of the season.

Since his first league appearance in November, Toure has started all but 5 games in the English top flight for the Citizens and has become a crucial member of the team. Overall, he has played 27 games this term across all competitions, scoring 6 goals and setting up 3 – not a bad return for someone who was left out in the cold for close to 4 months.

Having been the face of the rebuilding at Manchester City since the start of this decade, Toure has been extremely important in the club’s rise to prominence. He was one of the cornerstones on which the Citizens’ two Premier League titles were built upon. In his 7th season with the club, he has made close to 300 appearances for the club, scoring 81 goals and in the process has won 6 major trophies with the club.

Toure might not be the force that he used to be in his heydays, with his bulldozing runs from the middle of the park and his fierce shots from distance. However, as he has shown this season, that he still has plenty left in the tank to offer. The fact that he has adapted to Guardiola’s wishes and has been putting in the hard yards defensively on the pitch tells a lot about the desire and the willingness of the 33-year old to continue contributing for the team.

Guardiola, who is known to be a tough taskmaster and a hard man to please, recently described Toure as ‘outstanding in one of his press conferences. That in itself is an indicator of how far Toure has come this season after being frozen out of the squad in the beginning. He might be on the wrong side of 30 and may not be the player that he once used to be. But Toure has plenty to offer this City side and deserves a new contract at the club.
