Two Defenders Who Liverpool Can Look To Sign Before The Deadline Day

Liverpool are one of the many clubs in England that are still busy in the transfer market. The 3-3 draw against Watford in the first game of the season shows the frailties they have in their squad and Jurgen Klopp is, unsurprisingly, looking at a player who can add solidity at the back.

They have other issues to worry about but none more important than their backline and it is quite clear that they will have to sign a defender or two from now before the deadline day. So who can Klopp lure to Anfield? Here are two defenders Liverpool should surely look to bring to the club this summer:

Virgil van Dijk (Southampton)

The Dutch international is easily one of the best defenders in England at the moment and has been a subject of a transfer saga this summer. He is wanted by every top club in the country but Jurgen Klopp managed to make him want to come to Anfield. However, that angered Southampton, who drew an apology from the Merseyside outfit early in the season.

Van Dijk has now already handed in a transfer request but Liverpool are waiting for the Saints to give them permission to approach the player. Chelsea are one team looking to make a bid for him this summer but Van Dijk is exactly what Liverpool need this season. His height and aerial dominance is something Liverpool lack at the moment and he is a player they desperately need to add to their backline, if they are to compete for the title.

Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid)

Though not a player easy to lure away from the Vicente Calderon, Jose Gimenez is one player Liverpool should do everything to land, this summer. A smart and strong player, tailor-made for the English game, Gimenez will cost a similar amount as Van Dijk, thanks to the number of years remaining on his current deal. He will be even harder to persuade, as Atletico Madrid are currently hit with a ban on incoming transfers.

However, Liverpool will be ready to offer truck-loads of money, which the Spanish club might not be able to refuse. They might eventually decide to let him leave, and search for a replacement in January. The lack of playing time at the Spanish capital should be enough for Liverpool to lure Gimenez to Anfield and his age makes him a long-term option.
