Firepower Up Front! – Three Strikers Who Liverpool Can Target In January
Liverpool did some excellent business in the summer with signings like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Dominic Solanke and most particularly Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has literally surprised the entire footballing world with his performances for the Reds this season.
Jurgen Klopp has completely transformed the squad that he took over from Brendan Rodgers when he joined the club in 2015. From the players to the staff and the playing style, Liverpool like look like an entirely new team after the German’s arrival.
However, what the German manager really needs now is a world class striker. The Reds have been missing a quality target man since the departure of Luis Suarez and must look to sign a striker in the month of January.
With the winter transfer window just around the corner, let’s take a look at three strikers Liverpool should target in January.
Timo Werner
The 21-year-old is one of the hottest young prospects in Germany after his impressive season with RB Leipzig last season. Werner is reportedly said to be one Jurgen Klopp’s important targets and was linked heavily with a move to the Merseyside in the summer.
While a move did not really materialise, the interest in the striker hasn’t gone down. With Klopp having already signed Naby Keita from Leipzig, Werner could be the next to follow.
The 21-year-old is similar to Firmino in terms playing style as he unsettles the opposition with his movement and has plenty of pace. He loves to attack and will be a tremendous asset on the counter.
Andrea Belotti
The 23-year-old Italian striker has been making waves in Italy over the last couple of seasons and is one the best young strikers in world football at the moment. The last time Liverpool bought an Italian striker, it turned out to be a complete disaster as Mario Balotelli did everything except making an impact at the club.
Belotti, on the other hand, is a complete opposite of Balotelli when it comes to both character and skill. The 23-year-old is good with both his feet and is also strong in aerial duels. The Italian also brings tactical intelligence and work rate which Klopp adores in his players.
The only worry could be his price tag with Torino reportedly not accepting any bids under £88.8m for the marksman. The Italian scored 28 goals in 38 appearances for Torino FC last season and has currently scored 5 goals in 9 games this season.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
This has been one name constantly linked with Liverpool over the years but never really became a reality. The Gabon international striker is one of the most consistent strikers in Europe and scored 40 goals last season and 39 the season before that.
Goals are obviously his forte but he also brings a lot of pace as well as creativity to the attack. Although Liverpool already have a lot of pace in their attack, a little bit more wouldn’t really hurt, would it?
Aubameyang has a contract with Dortmund until 2020 but with him being suspended by the club for the second time, it might just be possible to lure him away from Germany. Klopp might as well throw in a decent bid in January and try his luck.
