Why It Is A Good Move For Manchester United To Sign Celtic’s Kieran Tierney

The left-back position has been a problematic area for Manchester United for quite some time now and if latest reports are to be believed, they are targetting Celtic sensation, Kieran Tierney.

The 20-year-old has earned rave reviews for his performances and is understood to be on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs. Although Jose Mourinho was also interested in signing Danny Rose from Tottenham Hotspur, it can be deduced that the club is interested in seeking a slightly more economical option.

As far as the situation at Old Trafford goes, United have Ashley Young doing admirably well at left-back and Luke Shaw is back from his season-ending injury and even featured a couple of times for the club. That said, there is no denying the fact that they are yet to find a natural player for that position and one might even say they have been devoid of a stable left-back ever since Patrice Evra’s departure.

However, with the January window up and running, it does seem like the right time for the club to make an investment to truly strengthen the defence. Although Young seems like the ideal option in the sense that he can effortlessly combine pace with defensive solidity, the fact is that he does not seem like a viable option for the long run. At 32 years of age, Young does not have too many years of top-class football ahead of him, hence making it the ideal time to sign a youngster like Tierney.

The Celtic star can learn and work with Young to develop his talent and take over the mantle eventually. As far as Shaw is concerned, speculation is rife that he is set to make an exit either this January or over the summer, even after signing a new deal. He did show promise when he first joined the club from Southampton but ever since he got injured, he has struggled quite a bit.

A player like Tierney could vastly benefit the United side. He is quite versatile and can play in left midfield or act as a central defender. That could truly provide some depth for the squad in general and the youngster is also known to contribute to the attack while surging forward.

Tierney has scored two goals and provided four assists for Celtic so far this season and is likely to be a valuable addition to the Manchester United squad, not only for the present but also for the years to come.
