Go for it Jose – A midfield trio of Verratti, Pogba and Matic could take the Premier League by storm

Why Verrati, Pogba and Matic midfield trio will take the Premier League by storm

Manchester United finished second in the Premier League last season, 19 points behind champions Manchester City. Though the Red Devils finished as the runners-up, Jose Mourinho’s men were lackluster for most parts of the 2017/18 campaign.

Only Mourinho is capable of such sorcery. But the Portuguese manager couldn’t work his magic in the FA Cup final against Chelsea, with his former club winning the contest 1-0.

Mourinho has been busy in the transfer market and has already brought in Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported fee of £52m, including add-ons. United have also signed Porto youngster Diogo Dalot for about £19m as the club are aiming to mount a serious title charge next season.

But to do so, Mourinho needs to make more additions to his squad. Manchester United made a number of marquee signings over the last two seasons and yet failed to establish any sort of dominance in the Premier League.

Marco Verratti

The Red Devils are looking for a midfield maestro and Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Verratti has been offered to the club by super-agent Mino Raiola, who also represents Paul Pogba.

The Italian joined PSG from Pescara in 2012 and has managed to establish himself as one of the most talented midfielders in the world. He generally operates as a defensive midfielder but he is also capable of playing further up the field.

The 25-year-old has thus far made 156 Ligue 1 appearances for the club, scoring 5 goals. He is one of the first names on the team sheet for the French champions, with the player often being instrumental in the middle of the park. Verratti possesses a deft first touch and has an excellent ability to distribute the ball.

The Italian made a total of 22 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, providing 3 assists. But it’s not his offensive numbers that matter. Most often, when PSG score a goal, it would be Verratti who would have started the attack. He is a technically brilliant player, whose ability to circulate the ball in midfield is unparalleled.

If Mourinho is able to snap up the player, he would have a formidable midfield trio of Nemanja Matic, Verratti and Pogba at his disposal. Matic could then focus on his pure defensive role in the side which would give Pogba more freedom to move forward.

With Verratti’s presence, Pogba would be free of his defensive duties. Verratti could operate as a box-to-box midfielder for the Red Devils and look to supply the attackers on the counter.

The Italian is one of the most gifted footballers of his time and Mourinho should make his signing a top priority. And with Italy not qualifying for the World Cup, Mourinho and Ed Woodward can get down to business right away.
