Go for it Gerrard – This 30-year-old veteran shot-stopper could be an ideal No.2 for Rangers

Sometimes what starts in jest becomes a reality. Peter Lovenkrands, the former Rangers and Denmark forward, has recently been appointed a reserve team coach at Ibrox. And that appointment could well have set in motion the possibility of Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul joining the club.

Lovenkrands took to social media to announce the news and his post on Twitter read – “very happy to have signed a full-time contract at @rangersfc as coach for the reserve team – really looking forward to getting started.”

Krul, a former teammate of Lovenkrands when the two played together at Newcastle United, took the opportunity to send a jovial response, saying:

“I’m available on a free, still feel like an under-23. Well done pal, good luck.”

But what is on the surface a joke between friends, could become a possible transfer. Krul, 30, is unlikely to stay on at Brighton, and a move to Glasgow could be just what the shot-stopper needs.

The 27-year-old Wes Foderingham may well be in line to start the new season in goal for Steven Gerrard’s team, but the former Swindon and Crystal Palace custodian would fare well from a competitive challenge to his starting place.

Krul would provide just that. Somewhat misfortunate not to have been given more opportunity than the one appearance he made at Brighton last season, Chris Hughton seems to be happy to let his contract run out this summer and allow the Dutchman to leave.

It all stems back to a cruel knee injury he suffered in 2015, which has curtailed his opportunities. But he is a more than capable back-up for any team.

Barcelona have been linked with making a shock move for Krul in the summer, and the Catalan giants’ interest in him shows that the goalkeeper is far from finished.

So, if Gerrard wishes to boost his goalkeeping options by bringing in the former Newcastle man, he would do well to act fast and pounce on the opportunity to sign the Dutchman.

Krul would fit in well into the Rangers squad under Gerrard, who would want to implement a high pressing style at Ibrox. Renowned for his long passing, Krul could be the perfect orchestrator of fast counter-attacks.

His experience would also prove to be useful for Rangers, and all parties involved would benefit if the move does happen. But whether the Gers can act quickly enough to bring him in, is another question.
