Go for it Emery – Arsenal signing €30m veteran in January could be a step in the right direction

Why Arsenal are doing the right thing by targeting Filipe Luis

According to reports in the Sun, Premier League club Arsenal have been linked with a surprise January move for Atletico Madrid star Filipe Luis. The Brazilian, who was a part of the Chelsea squad once, is currently in the final year of his contract at the La Liga club, and there are doubts whether he will opt to stay put in Spain.

Mirror claims that Arsenal manager Unai Emery would want the services of the full-back this winter. The player is out of contract this summer but Atleti are demanding around €30m to complete a January deal for Luis.

Here’s why Arsenal and Emery are doing the right thing by keeping close tabs on the 33-year-old:

Arsenal need an upgrade

Currently, Arsenal have two senior left-backs who can do a good enough job for the manager. Both Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac are quality players who would provide enough competition for each other to perform at their best.

But the scenario is that the latter is injured and hasn’t taken the field since the pre-season, while the former was injured at first, but recovered enough to play the previous three games. The added factor is that Monreal can be a good attacking outlet, however, is a bit naive defensively. The same can be said about Kolasinac whenever he has taken the field for Arsenal.

Hence, having an experienced option in the form of Luis would be good for the Gunners. The Brazilian has the know-how of how to defend when required and also go forward to help the attack.

We are all well aware of Arsenal’s defending in the past few years, and it hasn’t looked good so far this season. Getting someone like Luis, who at Atleti, plays a brand of football which relies on defending deep and hitting teams on the counter, is bound to help the Gunners.

Emery would love a player of high pedigree, who can help organise the defensive structure of the team in a balanced way.

Verdict

At 33, it is crystal clear that Filipe Luis won’t play regularly if he joins Arsenal but Emery can use him diligently, deploying him in games against superior opponents. It will help the team to be more secure defensively.
