Why Chelsea Must Go All Out To Sign Arturo Vidal In The Summer

Chelsea have been linked with Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal since the January window. Although the deal did not work out, Antonio Conte is expected to land him in the summer. However, recent reports suggest that the player is close to extending his contract with the German giants despite the interest from the Blues.

Given the kind of problems Chelsea have faced in the midfield area throughout the season so far, the club must do every single thing they can to convince Vidal to change his mind.

Whether or not Chelsea fans like to admit it, the fact is that letting Nemanja Matic join Manchester United was quite a costly mistake. He was not only experienced but was also skilled and that has left a major void in the midfield that Conte has been struggling to fill. At present, he has the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko and N’golo Kante but sadly, only Kante has been putting in solid performances on a consistent basis.

It must be noted that Conte seems to have some affinity towards fielding Bakayoko, even though Fabregas and Drinkwater are present in the squad. If Bakayoko’s most recent display against Watford was anything to go by, the player is in dire need of sharpening his skills before taking on such responsibility again. He was quite a mess against the Hornets and he earned the ire of a lot of Chelsea fans due to his lacklustre and lazy display.

It is because of all these problems in the middle that Chelsea have struggled for a good majority of the season so far. Besides Kante, there is nobody who can come in and offer adequate support while also knowing when to surge forward and when to fall back. To that end, having a player like Vidal can truly work wonders for the London-based outfit. Not only is Vidal experienced; he is also extremely skilled and seems to be showing no signs of slowing down even at 30 years of age.

One might argue that Vidal cannot be a long-term option but given the severity of Chelsea’s situation, they cannot afford to lose out on signing a player like Vidal. He is crafty, powerful and can influence the game in ways that none of Conte’s current options can, thus making him a truly valuable target.

Be it in the attack or in the defence, Vidal can do them effortlessly and so signing him could work wonders for Chelsea. Hence, to rectify the various problems they are facing in the midfield, the Blues must do all they can to acquire his signature.
