Go For It Caixinha – Luring This £650,000 Striker From League Rivals Would Be A Massive Coup

Louis Moult

Why Rangers Should Beat Birmingham City To The Signing Of Louis Moult

Birmingham City appear to have announced themselves as the chief opposition to Rangers’ attempt to sign Motherwell forward Louis Moult during the upcoming January transfer window.

Having signed for the Scottish Premiership side from Wrexham back in 2015, Moult is a proper crowd favourite now at Fir Park and in domestic terms at least, he is one of the most prolific strikers in the Scottish leagues. Moult scored 15 league goals in each of his first two seasons at the club, but has already scored 5 in 9 games this term and has become a hot property.

Moult was handed the Scottish Premiership Player of the Month award for the month of September as his stock continues to grow. His club being more than aware of what value he holds, yet he is out of contract at the end of this season.

Given that particular circumstance, the Steelmen may look to cash-in on him over the winter, given that the 25-year-old is free to leave for nothing next summer. With relegation clearly not an issue, it would be wise for them to allow him to leave.

Birmingham City and indeed possibly Preston North End both appear to be interested in taking him back to south of the border, though a bid of around £650,000 from Rangers in January may well just seal the deal.

Rangers, at least reportedly, attempted to lure Moult to Ibrox in the summer with a bid of around £400,000 but this was seen as a paltry bid at that point. A bigger bid and the passing of time though will drastically change the situation at Motherwell and it would be no surprise to see Moult arrive soon.

The form of Alfredo Morelos up front for Rangers, backed up recently by the impressive Mexican attacking midfielder Carlos Pena, has seen the failure to capture Moult not become an issue but they are sure to return for him soon.

In the short term, I don’t think it’s too important that Rangers sign Moult given the form of Morelos, however, the bigger picture is that they need a large squad going into next season and they’ll be planning for that already.

Rangers will already be planning for a European campaign next season but domestically, taking another player doing well for a league rival further strengthens their position in the Scottish Premiership. In all competitions this term, Moult has hit 9 goals in 14 games to mark himself out as one of the most improved players in Scotland.
