Newcastle United Opinions: Ezequiel Ponce the ideal man for Magpies
Newcastle United are one of England’s most celebrated and historic football clubs. They have created a long-standing legacy that dates back many years. Including the legendary likes of Alan Shearer and Michael Owen, there have been a multitude of amazing centre-forwards that have graced this club’s past.
Over the course of this season though, they have really struggled in that department and this has certainly cost them dearly. Currently 15th and a mere 4 points off Southampton in 18th place, the Magpies have a lot of work to do from now till the end of the season.
This is not going to be easy for them though, given their almost pathetic goalscoring record. From their 27 games so far this campaign, they have conceded only 34 but have only managed to put the ball in the back of the opposition net on 24 occasions.
At less than a goal per game, that record has to improve drastically and fast if Newcastle are to stay in the Premier League this season. Their current goalscoring dependence lies on the shoulders of West Bromwich Albion loanee Salomon Rondón who is the Magpies’ top scorer this season with 6.
When he does eventually return at the end of the season, Joselu and Yoshinori Muto aren’t the kind of players who can consistently get the goals for one of England’s most supported clubs. They will have to look into the transfer market to bring in a player of real value.
The recent signing of Miguel Almiron is certain to help their cause but another striker to partner the talented Paraguayan international must be on Rafa Benitez’s agenda for the upcoming summer window.
Given the situation, AS Roma loanee Ezequiel Ponce, who currently plays for Greek club AEK Athens, seems like the perfect player to come into this talented squad and really strike up a partnership with the Paraguayan forward.
Ponce is a youth product of the same club as Lionel Messi – Newell’s Old Boys but then decided to join Roma in 2015. He has since had loan spells at Lille in Ligue 1 and Granada in La Liga. His development has been rapid but he has really come to fore in Athens.
The agile 20-year-old has been in blistering form for his club this season having notched up a whopping 14 goals and 3 assists from his 20 league games this campaign. He also featured in 6 of Athens’ Champions League group stage games.
His movement and pace are a real asset to the Greek side and added to his amazing finishing abilities, he has a very bright future ahead of him. He seems to always be one step ahead of the defender and makes very intelligent decisions near the box as well.

His goalscoring records show that he is a highly rated talent and luring Roma to sell won’t be an easy task. But, given their current circumstances, the Argentine forward seems like the perfect player to come to St.James’ Park and really bring back the glory days.
