Why West Ham Should Sign Ross Barkley In The Summer

West Ham United are planning an ambitious swoop for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley in the summer, as per reports from the Daily Star. The 23-year old Englishman is widely tipped to leave Goodison Park in the summer, following his failed contract negotiations with the club. ‘

Barkley just has a year left on his existing deal with Everton, but he did not put pen to paper on a new contract that the Toffees offered, as he was dissatisfied with the wages on offer and invited the wrath of manager Ronald Koeman, who issued several ultimatums to the player saying that the Englishman would be sold if he failed to sign a new deal.

Tottenham Hotspur were touted to the most likely destination for the Everton academy graduate, but now fellow London club, West Ham too have entered the fray for his signature. The report claims that the Hammers are willing to match Barkley’s £140,000-per-week wage demand, that will see him double his current pay. It was also reported by the Telegraph that Everton had placed a £50million price tag on the midfielder.

West Ham have had to endure a poor season after the bundles of hope their previous campaign had generated. After finishing the 2015/16 season at 7th place in the Premier League, the Hammers ended this season at 11th position – could have been much worse if not for results going their way on the final day. Their UEFA Europa League campaign too ended before it completely took off, which has put manager Slaven Bilic under some serious amount of pressure.

After a poor year, on the pitch and in the transfer window, the former Croatia boss will need to make sure he gets his hands on the right players this time around. And Barkley seems to be the right way to go.

There is no shortage of attacking players in the West Ham ranks – Manuel Lanzini, Andre Ayew, Robert Snodgrass, and Michail Antonio. But apart from Lanzini and Antonio, none of the others has been able to make a mark. Ayew hasn’t been able to find his best form since his return from a long-term injury, whereas Snodgrass, who arrived with a lot of expectations in the January window, disappointed as well.

In Barkley, the Hammers will be getting someone who has proven himself on the Premier League stages now. He may have struggled to add consistency to his game, but there is no doubt about the great amount of potential in the 23-year old. The England international finished the recent campaign with 6 goals and 9 assists from 39 games across all competitions.

Someone who can play anywhere in the attack or in the central midfield, Barkley will provide the manager with options due to his versatility and will chip in with goals and assists in plenty. He may have been unable to perform on a regular basis for the Toffees, but the constant criticism by Ronald Koeman may have also had a little to do with it.

If backed by the manager, Barkley can be the player that he was touted to become. Signing Barkley will be the kind of statement that West Ham will need to make after a below par season and this may get them back where they should be.
