Go for Dyche – Signing this Man City veteran would fuel Burnley’s Europa League ambition

Why Signing Man City’s Yaya Toure Would Fuel Burnley’s Europa League Ambition

Yaya Toure says he intends to stay in the Premier League after leaving Manchester City at the end of the season. After eight long years, the 34-year-old played his final home match for City against Brighton on Wednesday.

With 3 Premier League titles, 2 EFL Cups and an FA Cup, Toure has enjoyed a glittering career at City.

The Ivory Coast midfielder scored an incredible 20 goals in 35 Premier League appearances in the 2013/14 season as City mounted a late surge to the title to deny Liverpool. His contribution during the past decade continues to be largely overlooked by the City fans.

As much as Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp winner is rightly remembered as the most incredible moment in City’s history, Toure’s FA Cup semi-final goals – in both the semi-finals against Manchester United and final against Stoke City in 2011 just cannot be forgotten.

Now with the Ivorian set to depart the Premier League champions at the end of the season, should Burnley sign him?

Toure, who is set to turn 35 this Sunday, played more of a fringe role under Pep Guardiola this term but he is still a hugely talented player and would walk straight into the starting XI of any English club.

He has only made nine league appearances this season but no one can doubt his ability to dominate the midfield, even though he has entered the twilight of his career.

At his best, the Ivorian was a midfield powerhouse who could destroy an opponent and create goals for his team.

With his physical presence, Toure was capable of winning games by holding the scruff of its neck. He has also been the best African to play in the league and being a born winner, he deserves to go down as a legend in the City folklore.

At Burnley, Sean Dyche could utilise Toure’s skill and experience to very good effect. Toure now lacks the speed and agility which once made him a classic box-to-box midfielder but one cannot take away his hunger and desire to win every game. His experience would be handy, while the winning mentality he would bring to the Burnley dressing room is too good to explain.

The Clarets will be playing in the Europa League next term, which offers Toure a fantastic opportunity to play in Europe. He probably could be the focal point of a team as Dyche would look to impress in the European competition.

However, Toure’s eye-watering wages could be a stumbling block for Burnley. If Dyche could persuade the Burnley board to spend heavily on Toure, then it would be a win-win situation for both the parties ahead of next season.
