Liverpool just about managed to beat Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage to go into the final international break of the season at the top of the Premier League table.
Sadio Mane and James Milner were the scorers for the Reds, while Ryan Babel equalised for the home side to provide a massive scare to his former team.
Around the 26th minute mark, a neat one-two involving Roberto Firmino and Mane freed up the latter with a chance to score from few yards out. The Senegalese star then made no mistake in tucking that away and give the lead to Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Liverpool were comfortable in possession as Fulham sat deep. However, the away side got its chance 16 minutes from time. A sliced Milner clearance forced Virgil van Dijk to head the ball into the path of Alisson, with Babel at his back.
But the defender’s header was slightly weak, leaving the goalkeeper in an awkward situation and the ball eventually squirmed through to the Fulham man, who had to tap it into an empty net.
Seven minutes later, Fulham keeper Sergio Rico had a brain fade moment when he couldn’t catch the ball from a shot and fouled Mane inside the box when the Liverpool man was going in the opposite direction of the goal.
Milner stepped up to take the penalty and dispatched with calmness to bring collective relief in the Reds camp.
All in all, a vital win for the away side, who are now two points clear at the top of the table having played a game more than champions Manchester City.
