According to a report in Daily Record, Scottish giants Rangers are linked with a move for former Kilmarnock striker Josh Magennis this summer. The 28-year-old is currently plying his trade for English side Bolton Wanderers.
The Northern Ireland international helped Killie to safety in 2016, before making a move to Charlton and then making a short trip to Bolton. He made 42 league appearances for the Trotters last season (13 from the bench) and managed to score four goals and supply one assist.
Currently, his contract at the Macron Stadium expires next summer, hence, if Bolton are looking to offload him, they may have to do it during this transfer window itself.
Here’s why Rangers could bag an intelligent swoop by offering a deal to Magennis this summer:
As of now, Rangers have three centre-forward options – Jermaine Defoe, Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty. While the former is now 36 years old and may play a bit-part role from next season, Morelos’ future is still up in the air.
Furthermore, Lafferty hasn’t done enough in his second spell at the Ibrox. Hence, he cannot be trusted to lead the line on a regular basis.
Therefore, it makes sense for the Gers to make a move for a striker during this summer transfer window. For that reason, they would be right to sign Josh Magennis from Bolton.
The 28-year-old has good pace for a player who is physically strong and loves a battle with the centre-backs. He can link-up play with other attacking midfielders and create a goal scoring opportunity. His finishing is not too bad either in or around the box.
