Rangers opinion: Gerrard should use his Anfield links to sign Ben Woodburn

According to the Scottish Sun, Rangersare interested in signing Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn in the summer, as manager Steven Gerrard looks to use his Anfield links to bring in another Reds starlet to Glasgow.

Rangers, though, are not the only club to have been linked to a loan move for the 19-year-old Welsh international, with the Scottish Sun claiming that a host of Championship sides, including Hull City, Brentford, West Brom, and Blackburn Rovers are all interested in securing the services of the promising youngster in the summer.

Woodburn was shipped out on loan to Sheffield United last summer but his lack of regular minutes and injuries prompted the Reds to recall him from his loan spell midway through the season.

The 19-year-old, however, has continued to impress for the Liverpool U-23s and scored a brace against Rangers in a closed-door match at Ibrox on Monday.

Woodburn became the third-youngest player in Liverpool’s history when he made his first-team debut for the Reds back in 2016 and the Welshman also holds the record for being the club’s youngest ever goalscorer.

The 19-year-old has made a total of 11 appearances for the Reds in all competitions since his debut a couple of years back.

To put things into perspective, Rangers can bag a massive coup if they manage to beat off competition for the youngster in the summer and Gerrard’s presence at the helm of affairs is likely to hand the Gers a boost in their pursuit of the Liverpool starlet.

Rangers snapped up Ryan Kent and Ovie Ejaria on loan from Liverpool last summer and Ben Woodburn might be the next in line at Anfield to make his move to Ibrox.

Rangers have already signed the likes of Joan Jordan and Jake Hastie on pre-contract deals from Kilmarnock and Motherwell respectively but they can certainly do with another quality attacker in their ranks.

Alfredo Morelos has done an excellent job as the spearhead of the attack but it remains to be seen whether the Gers will be able to hold on to the Colombian hitman, as he continues to be linked with a big-money move away from Ibrox.

To add to that, Kyle Lafferty’s poor run of form has further taken a toll on the club’s attacking resources up front.

Suffice to say, Rangers need to add more firepower and creativity to their attack if they want to challenge Celtic for the domestic title next season, having fallen well short of their arch-rivals in the title race this time around.

And a versatile player like Ben Woodburn can certainly add that little bit of quality and X-factor to the team’s attack.

Essentially a right-footed attacker, who operates as an inverted winger or a wide-forward down the left, Woodburn is also capable of playing on the right and through the centre as a supporting striker.

A fast, agile and fleet-footed attacker who is noted for his pace, agility, and sharpness on the ball down the flanks, the Welshman also possesses good close-control, well-rounded passing attributes and the technical ability to make an impact in the final third.

He has that finesse and guile about his game and has shown a level of maturity that belies his tender years.

With that being said, the 10-cap Welsh international has a bright future ahead of him and Rangers should do everything in their power to strike a deal for him in the summer.
