Gerrard to make 4 changes – Strongest 4-1-4-1 Rangers XI to face Ayr United

Predicted Rangers line-up to face Ayr United in the Scottish League Cup

Rangers welcome Scottish Championship leaders Ayr United in this week’s Betfred Cup quarterfinal at Ibrox.

Rangers are flying at the moment after they followed up an impressive away draw against Villarreal in the Europa League with a 5-1 win over St. Johnstone on Sunday.

Steven Gerrard’s men will be aiming to book their place in the last four of the Betfred Cup. However, Ian McCall’s Ayr side will be hoping to pull off a shock upset against the Gers.

Team News

Gareth McAuley and Ryan Jack missed the weekend’s win over St. Johnstone and won’t recover in time to play in the cup game. Ovie Ejaria recovered from a knock by earning a place on the bench but Borna Barisic could miss out with a hamstring knock.

Meanwhile, Jamie Murphy, Lee Wallace and Jordan Rossiter all remain sidelined.

Probable Rangers XI

Formation: 4-1-4-1

Manager: Steven Gerrard

Allan McGregor (GK)

McGregor is Rangers’ unquestionable No.1 in goal and he will retain his place for the midweek game.

Jon Flanagan (RB)

Flanagan could be given a start in his preferred position on Wednesday. He is an attacking full-back who is defensively reliable as well.

Connor Goldson (CB)

Goldson is Rangers’ defensive lynchpin and is a certain starter against Ayr United.

Nikola Katic (CB)

Katic appears to be Rangers’ best summer signing. He is strong in the tackle, solid in the air and can bring the ball out from the back.

Andy Halliday (LB)

With Tavernier and Barisic major doubts, Halliday could be pitched at left-back for Rangers’ League Cup encounter against Ayr United.

Ross McCrorie (CDM)

McCrorie will be the player protecting Rangers’ backline and spreading the play from the base of the midfield.

Graham Dorrans (RCM)

Dorrans has done well since returning from a long injury layoff. He is expected to start in central midfield on Wednesday.

Scott Arfield (LCM)

Arfield was one of the scorers for Rangers in the big win over St. Johnstone at the weekend. He is in very good form and will be looking to continue delivering the goods for the Gers.

Glenn Middleton (LW)

Middleton has highly impressed with his cameos this season. With explosive pace to burn and trickery in his bag, he could be a thorn for the Ayr defenders.

Daniel Candeias (RW)

Candeias scored in Rangers’ 5-1 win over St. Johnstone and will be looking to get on the scoresheet against Ayr United.

Alfredo Morelos (ST)

Alfredo Morelos is in fine goalscoring form and should lead the Rangers’ attack against Ayr United.
