Gas left in the tank? – Rangers would be wise to offer a fresh deal to this versatile midfielder at the earliest

Why Rangers must offer a new deal to Steven Davis

After his first stint between 2008 and 2012 at Rangers, Steven Davis arrived back at the Ibrox in January of 2019, initially on a loan deal from Southampton.

However, his positive impact on the Gers squad and good performances in the second half of last season propelled the club to make a one-year permanent deal offer, which was accepted in the summer. (h/t BBC)

The veteran Northern Ireland captain, who is now 34, continues to be one of the key players in this Rangers team. More than his performances, his leadership qualities has really helped this young team with a young manager.

Despite him one of the elder statesman in the team, Davis continues to defy the logic. He has featured in 15 games in all competitions this season already, most of those appearances coming from the start.

Below, we further expand his value to the team and conclude that the club should offer him another contract:

Davis still has in it him to produce the goods for one more season

Steven Davis is a versatile midfield player, who can play in any position across the central areas of the field. From being a defensive midfielder to being a number 10 behind the striker, the experienced Irishman has done it all.

In terms of attributes, the 34-year-old is an astute user of the ball, reads the game well without possession to help the team recover possession and is a physically strong player.

If we somehow forget that he is 34, many would say that the Northern Ireland international still has a lot of years of football left in him. If not many, he certainly looks good for one more season after this.

Rangers have benefited from his presence not just in the team, but also in the dressing room.

The Gers should offer a new contract to Steven Davis before he gets eligible for pre-contract talks in January.
