Gameweek 5 – UEFA Champions League Team Of The Week Featuring Chelsea And Tottenham Stars

Gameweek 5 – UEFA Champions League Team Of The Week

Another Champions League game week has passed us by and we are nearing the pivotal Christmas time – a period which is known to either make or break the fortunes of a lot of clubs in the past. More than the big teams, there were several players from relatively smaller teams that rose to prominence because of their spell-binding performances. Be it Paris Saint-Germain’s spectacular 7-1 victory against Celtic or Juventus and Barcelona’s drab fest, this week had a lot in store.

As of now, the group stage matches are more or less done and we have a fairly clear idea of who will progress to the next round and who will not. With that said, let’s take a look at this week’s best XI players from the Champions League matches.

CL Team Of The Week

Tomas Vaclik – FC Basel (GK)

The whole team received a lot of praise as Basel pulled off a 1-0 win against Manchester United but one player who truly made a difference was their goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik. He made numerous important saves to keep Manchester United at bay and maintained a clean sheet.

Michael Lang – FC Basel (RB)

Lang put in a quality performance against Manchester United. He not only defended well but also established himself as an attacking threat in his wing-back position. Moreover, the player was responsible for securing the winning goal.

Medhi Benatia – Juventus (CB)

Benatia was perhaps the only shining light in an otherwise boring match between European giants Barcelona and Juventus. Not only were his clearances and interceptions top-notch, Benatia also kept the Catalan attack at bay for major parts of the game.

Eric Dier – Tottenham Hotspur (CB)

Dier was plucked out from the midfield to deputise for Toby Alderweireld at the back and the player did so with no qualms. He defended well as he made some important clearances and he also came close to scoring once.

Felipe Luis – Atletico Madrid (LB)

Luis was one of the main reasons as to why Atletico Madrid did not concede any goals against Roma. He marshalled the defence admirably while also contributing to the attack when it came to scoring those two goals. An overall solid performance from Luis.

Ever Banega

Ever Banega – Sevilla (CM)

When the whistle blew at half-time, Liverpool were confident of walking away with a spectacular 3-0 victory. However, in the second-half, Sevilla sparked a miraculous comeback to go back to 3-3 only because of Banega. His creativity played a major role as he created chances while also dictating the pace of the game.

Naby Keita – RB Leipzig (CM)

Leipzig subjected Monaco to a stunning 4-1 loss and Keita was an instrumental member of the squad. He scored the 4th goal right ahead of half-time and the way he dominated the proceedings was truly marvellous to watch.

Cesc Fabregas (CAM)

When Fabregas was substituted in the game against Manchester United in the Premier League, he walked off to resounding claps and appreciation from the fans. No doubt they had a similar reaction to his splendid performance against Qarabag which helped Chelsea secure a 4-0 win.

Neymar made Celtic look like school kids as PSG thrashed the Bhoys 7-0

Willian (RW)

After receiving a lot of flak for his ineffectiveness, Willian proved everybody wrong by scoring two goals against Qarabag which certainly propelled the Blues towards greater waters.

Neymar (LW)

PSG displayed the full extent of their attacking capability as they thrashed Celtic 7-1 owing to a lot of support from Neymar. He scored the first 2 goals for the club and was unstoppable after that as he ripped their opponents’ defence apart.

Roberto Firmino (CF)

Firmino was easily Liverpool’s best performer even as the club let go of a 3-0 lead against Sevilla. He scored a goal within the first 5 minutes to put the Reds on top and even chipped in with another one. Sevilla seemed to have no answer to Firmino’s brilliance.
