What Does The Future Hold For The Likes Of Darmian, Valencia And Others If Manchester United Sign This Brazilian?

Manchester United don’t seem to be done with the transfer market as of yet. After signing the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Eric Bailly, the Premier League side are going in for another defender, Fabinho from Monaco.

The 22-year-old Brazilian right-back has actually worked with Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho earlier during their time at Real Madrid and this could be one reason why the Portuguese manager has set his eyes on the defender.

Manchester United do not really have a lot of quality in the right-back slot, the likes of Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, and Marcos Rojo all having played a few games in that position. None of the players to have tried out for that slot have impressed and with Luke Shaw returning to full fitness in the left-back position, it comes as no surprise that Mourinho does want to shore up the one final weakness in the team.

Fabinho is an attacking full-back, akin to Antonio Valencia but he is more consistent than the current Manchester United player. The 22-year-old Brazilian notched up six goals for Monaco last season, which is not bad, given the fact he plays as a defender.

He also assisted in four goals, which does shed some light that the Brazilian is decent in attack and likes to play a major role in the attack. The most important thing, when compared to the other defenders in this position for United, is that Fabinho is extremely reliable and was one of Monaco’s stars last season in Ligue 1.

The 22-year-old’s consistency at the back should provide welcome relief to Jose Mourinho at the club as Valencia, Young and even Matteo Darmian, who many predicted would go on to big things at the Manchester club, have all failed collectively to provide a proper solution to the right-back conundrum.

The signing of Fabinho could actually see a number of players leave United. While Antonio Valencia is a good squad player, he is not a defender anymore and would be used more as a winger. A similar case would take place with Ashley Young as well; it was a surprise as to when Louis van Gaal used the English winger as a full-back, given the fact that the former Watford star is known for his attacking ability and not his defensive work rate.

The biggest casualty of all this could be Matteo Darmian. The Italian failed to impress many at the club last season, despite having a great start to his career at Manchester United. There have been rumours that the 26-year-old only scored one goal in the Premier League but his overall rating from whoscored.com was just 6.91 in the Premier League campaign last season.

Fabinho might not have played in the toughest league in the world but his rating of 7.26 when playing as a right-back trumps most of the United defenders. He was also in the squad for the 2016 Copa America but did not get a start for the Brazilian team.

This could be the final deal that Manchester United makes in the transfer window and by the looks of it; they have made a pretty decent side for the upcoming season. There might be a few more players leaving the club now but United fans won’t mind as long as they lift the Premier League title this season.
