Fraser Forster Profile – Net Worth, Background, Early Life, Family, Club, and International Career

Fraser Forster is an English goalkeeper who plays for Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team. Throughout his early career, the player has always been regarded as the best in his business and was considered one of the upcoming promising talents during his youth days, especially after being a talisman for the Celtic team and holding the Scottish Top Division record of 1256 minutes without conceding a goal.

Despite being on an impressive rise during his early career, Martial’s trajectory went sharply downwards after his first season with Premier League club Tottenham. The player struggled to gain minutes at his new club due to an already established No. 1. Although his minutes in the current season have increased quite a bit after the departure of Hugo Lloris, Forster is yet to provide the level of performance that he showed glimpses of in his early years.

This article delves into the key aspects of the English talent’s life, exploring his early years, family background, net worth, career, and more.

Fraser Forster | Early Life and Family

Fraser Forster was born on March 17, 1998, to middle-class parents, Brian Clive Forster and his mother. He had been in love with football since childhood and used to play a lot during his youth. He has three elder brothers who are all interested in the sport. Fraser Forster is married to his wife and long-time girlfriend Leah Totton.

During his youth, the player joined the academy of the famous Wallsend Boys Club after playing for the local team Stocksfield. After showing signs of technical ability and outstanding goalkeeping ability, 15-year-old Forster joined Newcastle United’s academy in 2005, after earning his first professional contract with the club.

Fraser Forster | Club Career

Newcastle

Despite joining Newcastle with lots of promise, Forster was never able to make any first-team appearances in his 6 years with the club and was constantly loaned out to numerous clubs to gain minutes and experience under his belt. After a year in the youth academy and another year as the third-choice goalkeeper for the club’s first team, Forster was loaned out to EFL League Two club Stockport County FC on 2nd October 2008 for just a month and returned to Newcastle on 1st November, after playing just 6 matches for the lower-division club.

Bristol Rovers

After being benched on over 20 occasions in the Premier League, Fraser decided to go out again on loan to gain minutes and improve himself. Thus, Fraser signed a month-long loan deal with Bristol Rovers on July 31st, 2009, and appeared for the club in four matches during the loan spell.

Norwich City

Although Rovers wanted to extend the loan spell, a better offer from Norwich City meant that Newcastle decided to loan out Forster to the EFL League One club initially on a one-month loan deal, which was later extended till the end of the 2009/10 season due to Forster’s impressive performances between the sticks for Norwich City.

Fraser helped Norwich gain promotion to the Championship and also helped them win the EFL League One title with his impressive world-class saves and contribution to the team. Fraser went on to win the club’s Player’s Player of the Year 2010 and the Macron Golden Gloves Award for keeping the best record of 18 clean sheets in 38 league appearances, thus enhancing his reputation much more around the world. This season went on to become the turning point in the player’s career for good.

Celtic

Forster joined Celtic initially on a one-year loan deal on August 24, 2010, and went on to impress massively after debuting for Celtic on August 29, 2010, and keeping the clean sheet in a 1-0 win. He played almost every match for Celtic that season and kept a record of 23 clean sheets, breaking Celtic’s previous record. After finishing that season so impressively, it was expected that Newcastle might give Forster his fair share of opportunities but the player was met with more disappointments from the side of his parent club.

So, after being on the bench in the pre-season friendlies and the first league match for Newcastle, Forster rejoined Celtic on another one-year loan deal on August 17, 2011, for the rest of the season. After a few initial troubles, Forster settled well and had an impressive 2011/12 season at Celtic, helping them win the Scottish Premier League while also managing to break the previous best record of 23 clean sheets in the previous season with 25 clean sheets in the 2011/12 season. After providing two successful loan spells at Celtic, Forster was signed permanently on June 29, 2012 for a transfer fee of £2 million.

In the next two seasons with Celtic, Forster displayed many memorable performances and wonderful saves to help Celtic win three consecutive Scottish Premier Leagues and also qualify for the Champions League. Forster’s impressive saves in Celtic’s memorable 2-1 win against Barcelona are considered to be the highlights of Forster’s Celtic career. Forster’s performance over the year saw him named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in 2013. However, with such impressive performances, came outstanding interest from many top European clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United, and others.

Southampton

After helping Celtic through the qualifying matches to qualify for the Champions League in the 2014/15 season, Forster was signed by Premier League club Southampton for a transfer fee of £10 million on August 8, 2014. After initial troubles, mistakes, and injuries in new colors, Forster came into form in the 2015/16 season, making numerous important saves and helping Southampton finish in sixth place on 63 points in the Premier League, their highest-ever point tally, while also securing entry into the Europa League.

Although Forster was given the No. 1 jersey in 2016/17, Forster’s form became worse, leaking cheap goals and making many mistakes in the distribution of the ball, resulting in cheap goals. The player was criticized for appalling ball distribution skills and many pundits lashed out at him, despite his manager protecting him. However, Forster did end the season well with 14 clean sheets but wasn’t able to get Southampton any better than an 8th-place finish in the League.

Forster signed a five-year contract extension with Southampton on July 19, 2017, but his poor form continued in the 2017-18 season under a new manager Mauricio Pelligrino and although the manager defended the player on several occasions, Forster was eventually dropped from the team in December 2017, due to his consistent mistakes in front of his own goal. Forster’s decline in the pecking order continued in the 2018-19 season, with him playing his first match for the club on May 4, 2019, since December 2017.

Celtic (Second Stint)

Thus, Forster rejoined his former club Celtic on a one-year loan deal on August 22, 2019, and the player took the Scottish League by storm. Although he was not able to help the club do well in the Champions League, Forster helped Celtic win the League Cup final that season after making many incredible saves during the match. Forster also helped Celtic win the Scottish Premier League that season, after it was halted due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK.

Tottenham Hotspur

Despite several links with a permanent move back to Celtic, Forster stayed at Southampton to fulfill the 2 years left on his contract and provided the club with numerous match-winning performances whenever required during the two seasons. Eventually, Forster signed for Tottenham Hotspur on a two-year contract on June 8, 2022, as a free transfer and made his debut for the club on November 9th that year in an EFL Cup third-round loss to Nottingham Forest. Since then, Forster has acted as Hugo Lloris’ backup for Tottenham and has been called up whenever needed. Recently, Forster extended his contract with the club until 2025 on December 6, 2023.

Fraser Forster | International Career

On the international level, after performing well in the youth levels of the England national team and receiving numerous call-ups to the England national team squad in 2014, Forster finally made his debut on November 15, 2013 for the England national senior team in a 2-0 friendly loss against Chile.

Due to Forster’s performance in the 2013–14 season, the player was selected in the England national team squad for the FIFA World Cup 2014 but was always a second-choice goalkeeper to Joe Hart in the tournament. After his injury in 2015, Forster was once again called up in the England national team squad for the 2016 Euros but the player was yet again just a second-choice goalkeeper, getting no minutes in the competitions.

Since then, Forster has remained an unused substitute in subsequent matches and was eventually dropped from the national team squad after a dismaying display on the club level in 2017. Although the player had a good run of form in his initial days with his country, since then, Martial has not been called up to play in any other international tournament for the France senior national team.

After 5 years of no selection, Forster was once again called up for friendlies in the England senior national team squad on March 23, 2022, albeit only as a late addition to the squad, replacing Sam Johnstone. In March 2023, Forster was again called up to the England squad for the Euro qualifiers, but only as a late addition, replacing the injured Nick Pope.
