Forget Ross Barkley – Why Everton Fans Should Be Excited About This Potential £26m Signing

Ross Barkley of Everton

Why Davy Klaassen Would Be A Good Signing For Everton

Despite finishing 7th in Premier League and securing a place in Europa League third qualification round, Everton are struggling to keep hold of their star players who have hinted a move and refused new contract deals. Romelu Lukaku seems interested in rejoining his former club Chelsea, whereas, Ross Barkley, who has one year left on his current deal, has fueled speculations by rejecting a new contract offer.

Ronald Koeman, the Dutch boss, has brought significant improvements at Everton since his arrival last year from Southampton. However, he is fuming over the Ross Barkley saga and warned that the Englishman would be sold if he did not commit his future. But there has been no update from Barkley’s camp so far and it would be better for Koeman to spot his replacement.

Davy Klaassen, the Ajax skipper, has been monitored by Koeman in recent months and he is now plotting a swoop for the 24-year old Netherlands international who is valued around £26million (Telesport) by his current employers. The midfielder developed through the youth ranks of the Eredivisie heavyweights and has made 180 senior appearances in all competitions, netting 55 times. He has also represented his country at U16, U17, U19, and U21 levels and has been a regular for their senior side since his debut back on 5th March, 2014.

Klaassen enjoyed a highly successful campaign despite narrowly missing out on Eredivisie and Europa League title. He netted 20 goals and assisted 10 in all competitions from an attacking midfield role. Klaassen has stepped up for the Dutch giants since Christian Eriksen’s departure and has replaced him quite remarkably at a very young age.

The Ajax number 10 too is open to a move and reiterated it in a recent interview with Dutch newspaper Trouw (h/t talkSport):

“I think no-one would blame me, But I want everyone to have a good feeling. I can see that I cannot be honest about a lot of things right now.”

As things stand, Everton are front-runners and clear favourites to land the youngster if they decide to match the asking fee.

Klaassen will fit straight into Toffees’ starting lineup that has been occupied by contract rebel Ross Barkley. The Dutchman is quick in his movement, has great vision, controls the play from the middle of the park, and is hailed for his high work ethics. He will be a boost to Everton’s attack with his goal scoring traits, and his leadership skills will will only improve them further.

The Ajax star likes to build the game from midfield by playing short passes and loves to do lay offs. He links up well with fellow attackers and most importantly, brings fluidity to the game that the Merseysiders’ lacked due to Barkley’s inconsistency.

Klaassen is not physically as strong as the Englishman and his lack of defensive contribution is a concern. However, he is a youngster who holds a bright future and can become a Premier League star under Koeman with his enormous potential as well as quality.
