Forget Rose – This 22-year-old Spanish speed demon could be the perfect replacement for the Englishman

Tottenham Hotspur have joined the race to sign highly-rated Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo, who is also on the radar of Borussia Dortmund and Napoli.

Spurs have emerged as an admirable force under Mauricio Pochettino, with the club qualifying for the Champions League for the third straight season.

The north London club punches over their weight on a regular basis and have established themselves as a part of the top-6 in the Premier League. Tottenham, who have a good squad at their disposal, however, are keen to strengthen their team in the summer and have identified Grimaldo as a transfer target.

The 22-year-old former La Masia prospect, who was roped in by Benfica in January 2016, has managed to establish himself as a key player for the Portuguese giants. He has thus far made 63 appearances in all competitions for Benfica, scoring three times and setting up nine goals.

Spurs could lose Danny Rose in the summer, with the England international falling down the pecking order behind Ben Davies at White Hart Lane, owing to his injury problems.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with making a move for Rose. And Tottenham are looking at the prospect of signing Grimaldo if they part ways with Rose as the Spaniard will be a like-for-like replacement for the Englishman.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who is known to be a hard negotiator, will certainly not let Rose leave on the cheap. Tottenham sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City last summer for £53m, and it is believed that the north Londoners would command a similar price for Rose.

Grimaldo, the Spanish youth international, will be a perfect fit at Spurs. He will only get better under Pochettino’s guidance, with the Argentine manager known for his ability to develop youngsters.

The likes of Harry Kane, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Davinson Sanchez have become top-notch players under Pochettino, and Grimaldo could soon join the list if Spurs manage to get their man. The Spaniard could turn out to be a great signing for Tottenham as he possesses all the abilities to play in the Premier League.
