New contracts for Erik Lamela and Heung Min Son is the right move by Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur are yet to make a new signing this season after the club failed to mount a strong title challenge last time out. Mauricio Pochettino has been handed a new five-year contract which will tie him to the club until 2024.
It will be a huge year for the Lilywhites, who will be shifting to the newly constructed White Hart Lane this season. The club are buzzing as they embark on a new journey this year.
Despite Mauricio Pochettino failing to make any signings so far, the club have handed out new contracts to a number of players. Harry Kane signed a new six-year contract with the club last month, smashing the wage structure at the club.
The club have also subsequently handed out new contracts to Erik Lamela and Heung-min Son as well. Lamela signed a new 4-year contract with the club, while Son has penned a new five-year deal with the club that will tie him to the White Hart Lane until 2024.
Both will prove to be massive deals for the club as they are constantly on the rise. Since the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham Hotspur have made considerable progress in the Premier League. The Lilywhites are now regular title contenders and strong top-four finishers.
The club are yet to win a trophy with the manager and it seems like a matter of time before he does. Heung-Min Son was one of Spurs’ most influential players going forward last season. He was a terror to the opposition defenders with his constant running on and off the ball.
The South Korean joined Tottenhan from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and has since gone on to make a total of 99 appearances for the club, scoring 30 goals and providing 13 assists. He has been phenomenal over the last two years, proving to be an able partner for England captain Harry Kane.
Son scored 12 goals and provided 6 assists in 37 Premier League appearances last season. He also scored 4 goals in 5 Champions League appearances. The South Korean was one of the club’s leading goal scorers last season. He is capable of playing on the wings and as a striker as well, such is his versatility.
Erik Lamela played a far lesser role than Heung Min Son but the Argentinian has shown glimpses of brilliance when given a regular run in the team. His Spurs career has been blighted by injury troubles since joining from Roma in 2013.
He has since gone on to make a total of 110 Premier League appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals and providing 20 assists. If he can work on his fitness levels, the 26-year-old will can produce the goods on a regular basis.
Both deals will be crucial to Spurs’ chances of winning the Premier League this season. One of the most crucial aspects of developing a squad is holding onto the best players and that’s exactly what Tottenham have done by keeping a hold of Kane, Lamela, and Son.
If Pochettino can manage to make one or two signings before the season kicks off, Spurs could just go on and lift the title next season.
