Forget Morata – Chelsea must go all out to sign this £75m world-class star amidst Sarri rumours

According to reports, Chelsea are interested in signing Gonzalo Higuain from Juventus this summer. The Blues are very close to replacing Antonio Conte with Maurizio Sarri as their manager. Sarri was the man behind transforming Higuain, helping the Argentine score 36 goals in 35 games in 2015-16 while at Napoli.

Following his goal-scoring exploits in 2015-16, Higuain moved to Juventus and has lifted back-to-back Serie A titles.

Chelsea are keen to revamp their squad after missing out on Champions League football. Conte salvaged the season by winning the FA Cup but the Italian is set to be replaced by former Napoli boss Sarri, who should do everything to bring Higuain to Stamford Bridge.

Alvaro Morata joined Chelsea last summer amidst a lot of glowing reputation but after a bright start, he faded and ended up scoring only 11 league goals. Olivier Giroud joined the Blues from Arsenal and has made an instant impact, scoring a couple of crucial goals.

However, it would be risky for Chelsea to sell Morata in summer and entirely depend on Giroud, who has formed a reputation of a ‘super-sub’ since his Arsenal days.

So, if Chelsea end up offloading Morata after just one season, they should try their best to replace the Spaniard with Higuain, who had a fantastic season with the Turin giants.

The Argentine international is a proven goal-scorer and has put the ball in the back of the net regularly for every club he has played so far. He was really good at Real Madrid but Higuain’s game has transformed since moving to Italy.

When Higuain was at Napoli, he single-handedly carried the team on his back and showed signs of leadership that nobody in him at Madrid. Since joining Juventus for £75m a couple of years back, well, the 30-year-old has even matured as a player. He has become more clinical and deadly in front of goal, while his work-rate has also improved massively under Max Allegri.

Conte made a big mistake by allowing a proven goal-getter in Diego Costa leave the club last summer. Above that, the Italian manager signed Morata to single-handedly shoulder the burden of scoring goals. Some really poor decision-making and tactics have led to Conte’s downfall this season following a wonderful debut campaign with Chelsea.

However, the onus will fall on Sarri should he become the next Chelsea manager. The maverick Italian has gained a lot of praise for turning Napoli into one of the most exciting teams to watch in Europe and to make Chelsea fire again, Sarri will need one of his former players to help him.

Higuain looks to be the ideal man to lead Chelsea’s attack next season. Whether Chelsea would be willing to spend a lot of money on the Argentine remains to be seen but if they do, they would be acquiring one of the most lethal centre-forwards in Europe, and one at the very peak of his powers.
