Forget Merino – 2 Top quality midfielders Newcastle could sign including Chelsea starlet

Newcastle United are in dire need of a new midfielder. As it is, Rafa Benitez was short of quality options in the centre of the park last season and with reports suggesting Mikel Merino’s possible departure, it goes without saying that the Magpies require added depth in that area.

Despite being a newly-promoted club in the previous campaign, Benitez and his men fought tooth-and-nail to secure a top-ten finish in the Premier League. However, from here on, the road will only get tougher.

If they are to harbour ambitions of a higher-placed finish next term, they must make some quality signings in the summer. And strengthening the midfield is a top priority for Newcastle.

And if Merino leaves St James’ Park this summer, Benitez’s midfield options will deplete further. With that in mind, here are two midfielders Newcastle can aim to sign in the ongoing transfer window.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Newcastle have been linked with a move for the Chelsea sensation and his recent comments about his future should alert the Magpies to his situation. As per The Guardian, Loftus-Cheek has clearly admitted that he does not want to stay back at Stamford Bridge, and Benitez must do everything he can to acquire his services.

The 22-year-old is one of the most talented players in the Premier League right now which was quite evident from his loan spell with Crystal Palace last season.

Regardless of whether or not Merino stays with Newcastle, Loftus-Cheeks’ skills and power in the midfield could work wonders for the Tyneside outfit next season.

Marko Grujic

Despite arriving at Anfield amidst a lot of expectations from Red Star Belgrade in 2016, Grujic has failed to live up to his billing. In fact, he has appeared just 8 times for Liverpool. At 22 years of age, he should look to play regularly to continue his development.

Grujic was sent out on loan to Cardiff City in January and he put in several notable performances for the Welsh outfit, who earned promotion to the Premier League. The Serbian is hugely talented and has the potential to be a top-notch midfielder.

Grujic could work well under Benitez as the Spaniard is quite well-known for his ability to develop young talents. Grujic’s presence could add a fresh dimension to Newcastle’s midfield.
