Forget it Silva – Everton would commit a massive blunder by making a move for this on-loan West Brom star in the summer

Everton opinion: Why Marco Silva should not sign Salomon Rondon

According to The Chronicle, Everton are front runners to sign Newcastle United’s forward Salomon Rondon. Rondon is currently on loan at Tyneside from West Bromwich Albion and has a lot of clubs keen on his signature in the summer.

Newcastle should keep hold of Rondon beyond the end of the season but face stiff competition from fellow Premier League clubs West Ham, Crystal Palace and Cardiff City but Everton are favourites to land the Venezuelan.

Everton have had major problems up top with forwards Cenk Tosun and Dominic Calvert Lewin failing to find the net regularly. The duo has scored a combined 6 goals in the league since the start of the campaign and manager Marco Silva has been forced to play Richarlison, away from his natural position, at striker.

The Toffees need to bring in a new forward in the summer who will help the club achieve their ambitions of qualifying for Europe but Salomon Rondon will not be an upgrade over their current set.

Rondon has been Newcastle’s top scorer this season with 6 goals and has led the line brilliantly under Rafa Benitez. Rondon’s height, power and presence in the box has been crucial for the Magpies and the 29-year-old fits into their system perfectly.

However, Rondon’s numbers have been poor. The former West Brom man has a shocking conversion rate of 13% and a shot accuracy of 28% so far this season. Rondon’s presence is influential but to have scored 6 goals from 46 shots is atrociously poor.

Under Marco Silva, Everton usually build their play up with slow passes and movement behind the box rather than regularly pinging balls into the middle. Everton’s crosses mainly come from their full-backs as their wingers cut inside with the ball to be more direct.

Rondon will turn 30 in September and there is little room for improvement in his game. His style of play will be difficult for Marco Silva to work on and the Venezuelan will take time to adapt to a new system.

Rondon’s best season in the Premier League came in his debut campaign in 2015/16. He scored 9 goals that season and even if he were to match it at Everton, it won’t be enough for the Toffees to reach their ambitions.

Conclusion:

Everton will be better off looking at a different option as Salomon Rondon will not be an upgrade over their current striking pair. Everton need to look at a forward who will contribute to at least 20 goals a season in order to achieve a top 7 finish in the league, something that Rondon will not provide.
